Would you sand & re-coat this hull? *pics

Im not sure if this is bad enough to mess with or not. I already have the engine out and rebuilding, and my budget is now extremely small... So if this was your ski would you go ahead and sand down the underside and re gel coat it? sorry for the giant pics... and i just sprayed it off so thats just water sitting on it, not paint bubbling up.

That's nothing.

You could sand the old paint off right down to SMC and get it almost perfect.
Apply some Marine-Tex in the bigger gouges and paint it with what ever paint turns you on.

It will all get scratched up all over again so I just use a rattle can and call it good.

i just dont want the fiberglass to start rotting where its gouged out. and it looks pretty crappy where the gelcoat is scratched off. I guess none of it is deep enough to affect handling or anything

Edit: I dont even know if fiberglass rots. Im guessing it degrades at some point though.

how much time does it take to sand it clean and recoat?

The hull is SMC and it was painted from the factory.
Not gelcoat.

It's not like you keep the hull in the water 24/7 so don't sweat the water eating up the glass.

since the engine is out already and its bothering me, i guess i should give it a shot. I just didnt want to start a huge project when i dont even have a running engine or working handlepole yet...

it'll take you a whole 2-3 hours to fix that bottom hull.. sanding.. a little grinding where that gouge is.. some glass/epoxy/filler... a little more sanding.. spray on 2-3 coats and youre done.

Hit the old paint with some 120 grit and watch how smooth that SMC will become in just a few passes.

i would just get the biggest bondo scrapper and mix a batch of epoxy resin with filler till it was really thick, then just spread it any where there are cracks. wouldn't even sand it when it dried.

spray bomb it white and call it a day

Just be careful on those chines...don't want to throw them way out of wack...especially if you are using an electric or pneumatic sander.

Sand it down with some 40-80 grit on a orbital palm sander on the curved areas and use a line sander on the flat surfaces.

Fill the deeper groves with 3-1 epoxy mixed with micro-balloons and sand it smooth.

Forget the gel coat because it's nothing but trouble and use epoxy primer with urethane paint in the color of your choice.

so the yellowish coat under the white is the SMC? And does that epoxy primer w/ urethane come in a spray can?

i bought two cans of appliance epoxy and some 100 grit sandpaper. So im just going to sand it down, fill in the gouges, resand, then spray paint.

got the handlepole off and started sanding on it last night. there are some softer spots, maybe where it wore through the SMC? SO is this appliance epoxy going to be enough to protect it?

btw. the aluminum handlopole im putting on is about 10 lbs lighter than the stock one..

if it wore through the smc youd have a hole in your hull.
