Windows 7 Beta issues

System is a 1.1G AMD w/ 512MB of RAM and built in video.

Installs seem to take longer. Configurations as well. But that could be because I'm not familiar with it yet.

Screen saver won't work at all. It says it requires a newer video card that supports Direct3D.

Microsoft office XP installed easily. It seems to come up quicker then in XP.

Came across something interesting. I changed to a static IP from DHCP and windows thought I was having a networking issue and started a diagnostic tool.

I can't get Tiger Woods 06 to install at all. The minimum system requirements for the game are met, and it installs with XP. Running the install program in compatibility mode doesn't do any good. The install program seems to die. (problem solved by using the correct CD to install with.)

Anyone else tried putting a game on 7 yet?

It is a beta so I expect issues. You are at the bare minimum requirements so for Vista/7 so it should chunk.

What vid card? If it is Nvidia I would try nvidia driver 97.31 or very close to it.

XP tweaked would be your best bet on that machine for sure.

Can I ask if this is your main system that you did this "upgrade" on?

I would re install and tweak XP if so cuz this is a beta and you will have some issues and then it expires in July.

So that tells me that all of those resources are at least doing something. LOL. That is new as far as I know.

No no. Solely for testing. Just an old system that we have laying around.

It's got an sis740 graphics chip. That should give you some idea on the capabilities.

We wouldn't put Beta software on a system we're using. Especially a Beta OS.

Yea I figured so.

Got Tiger woods 06 installed. Was trying to use the play disk to install...

DO NOT interrupt the boot process. Doing so results in a super long boot the next startup because it seems to check every aspect of your computer for anything that MIGHT be wrong. It even suggested me to a system restore just because I hit reset during boot.

XP normally just checks the filesystem...

Not digging this at all!

"What I notice with Vista (and would like to know how Windows 7 operates) is that upon logoff, the network card still responds to pings, indicating that the card and TCP/IP are still functioning. Since there is no desktop when there is no one logged in, TCP/IP cannot communicate with any software that is not operating as a service."

Between the 200GB partition and this news (I am testing it today) I am thinking a HUGE hell no to Microsoft Windows 7.

That's a mobo thing.

Remote boot or something. Look in your bios.

When setup, U can tell your computer to turn on from another comp on the network.

Windows 7 won't play my games from only a few years ago, so no here as well.

Wake-on-LAN? All the pc's I buy for work are setup that way for remote BIOS/etc updating.

No BIOS is heavily tweaked and even overclocked to accommodate the volts required for my highly overclocked CPU and mem.

What this tells me is that MS is communicating with and possibly changing my BIOS settings. I have heard that this is what the 200MB partition that 7 adds is used for.

If so I am not digging that at all. Gonna take a lot of time test and reverse engineer.

I wouldn't buy that at all. I don't think it's even possible for the OS to change the BIOS.

Not that there's anything in the BIOS the OS could change that'd do anything.

LOL. Its just something I read and it made sense at the time. We shall see.

Clearly the NIC appears active as apposed to my XP pro set up and my Linux set up.

My Bios settings are fine though. Nothing has changed. LOL.

But why is the question. I have to know!! I can't help it.

For the answer to that you need to delve down into your mobo and find out why it's still providing power to the NIC.

I'd still bet on W.O.L. capability is causing it. The ping request could be completely handled by the NIC.
