why surfers hate us...

Here's a question I'd like to see a response to:

If you are the first out at a spot and a surfer paddles out into the area you are already riding in should he have right of way ?

I know I'd move away just to avoid confrontation and a potential ticket but seriously, is it right for them to take advantage of the rules they know you have to follow ?

We run into this same issue with windsurfers at one of the lakes we ride at, they ride back and forth straight across the the middle of lake shore to shore.

Same as: A cyclist is going down a busy 2 lane road with no shoulder, no matter what they always have the right of way even if they can't do the speed limit. Around here those arseholes know it and take full advantage of it.

:soapbox: Oh jeeez ! don't get me started on bike riders !

On the side walk, off the sidewalk, cut corners, run stoplights and signs and on and on and on . . . . . . . . . . . .

here in the tampa area we don't have to worry about surfers. we're basically not allowed near the shore so we ride inlet sanbars or an island beach break (not legal either) that the surfers can't easily get to.

our big problem is those f'n kite boarders. they move just as fast as us and have as much range as us too. F them and their silly kites.

here there is no one to tell you where you can and cant ride...no lifeguards etc..so the respect issue is what it boils down to...personally i have huge respect for surfing as ive been doing it my whole life..but most jetskiiers unfortunately just dont get it..

tampa bay area is all developed. the beach is either private or a swim zone. it pretty much sucks.

I watched a video last night about a kiteboarder who got caught in an updraft and ended up about 300 feet straight up over land in just a few seconds. 30 stories up and still climbing until he hit a downdraft and crashed in a small clearing. He was lucky, didn't kill him and hardly a scratch.

most surfers i know are so arrogant and single minded that no matter what, they are going to hate jetskiers. tow-in surfing is the only reason they'll ever agree to have a ski in the water. taylor helps alot locally by goin out shreddin on his ski, then launchin the couch and towin some guys in.

kinda reminds me the of horseback riders on the trails hating all the dirtbikes and hikers hating all the mountin bikers. f-em all. (i know im generalizing, but it seams to me that these are overall opinions of people ive ran into)

no they hate us cause the majority of the time they see a skier they are kook riding..making wakes all over the lineup..
im talking just conversationally. i was talkin to a friend of a friend the other day, and he said he didnt like the idea of us being out there at all. i told him where we normally ride in pismo, away from the pier and surfers. it didnt matter though. of course, mention tow-in, and everythings different. making waves over the lineup doesnt really apply to pismo, since we normally ride in front of our trucks. yet we still get grief.

i have huge respect for surfers and their sport and have always tried to be very considerate when around them. but my ambivalence is wearing thin. i have found them, generally speaking, to be some of the most unreasonable, closed minded people to deal with.

although they are not allowed to be in our zone, on big swell days the beach patrol seems to look the other way while they have a float session thru our zone and when you stop to politely explain that they are in our zone and that it is the only 800' of beach we're allowed to be in, it nearly turns into a fist fight.

imagine if i was to idle into the middle of the line up at shark shallows and proceed to argue with them about me being there. i honestly think we should defend our turf as aggressively as they would defend theirs.

and if was bob sapp's size i would do just that!
