Super Jet Why do superjets command such a high price compared to kawasaki's?

I already own a 99 sxi pro that I got for a couple grand and now on the look out for a roundnose superjet to pair with it. I'm surprised by the difference in price for similar years. Can anyone enlighten me on why this is so? I thought yamaha sold considerably more units than kawasaki did and made a better craft? One would then think that more units means quicker depreciation? But that doesn't seem to be the case. Ten year old used models have asking prices for double what I paid on my kawi. What gives? Am I missing something?

How about some specifics on why they're preferred? I had a 98 sxi pro ten years ago and never had a lick of problems with it. Or are we talking maneuverability for freestyle skiing? Is it a weight thing?

yea its a weight and control thing.. superjets are much lighter than sxr's and tend to let loose easier since the hull is shaped differently. all in all most would say they're better for freestyle

Superjets are expensive because people do not resell them. They keep them longer, so there are less in the used market. Kawi's are sold used more often, more for sale drives the price down.

Also, quality has a thing to do with it. A Toyota or a Jeep holds it's value better than a Ford. Yamaha is more respected than Kawi.

I like my sxi pro and I have ridden an sxr before and while it was nice that the hull held it's line better than an sxi pro, it wasn't as fun. I've never been on a superjet before and am trying to find one local to pick up, but again, they're looking like double the price for same age as a kawi. It's almost better to just buy a new one since they're sticking around one more year.... decisions decisions.... :)

New is over rated imo. Take your time looking and do some reading here on the x and see what people are running for the kind of riding you do. Most will say pick up a used ski that's already modded. You will spend a ton of money picking up a new one and then doing the mods you will want, to get it where you want it, as compared to a used modded ski. Take your time and research a bit. I went from a 750 sx to a rn and will never look back. So much more fun to ride for many reasons.

Screw new. Buy a 96+ with a b-pipe, head, and other goodies and have fun. I had a 98 SXIPro as well. Very reliable. Had I never tried a SuperJet, I might still own the Kawi. But the SJ is 10 times more fun. Hell, it's probably 50 times more fun. And considering it is modded to the gills, it is very reliable as well.

I fully agree with the not buying new. I don't think I will ever buy a new SJ from the dealer, even if I had the money to blow. If you think about it, with a new ski you'll just end up pulling most of the stock parts off and spending a good ~$2k at least just to add a pipe, prop, plate, grate, head, ignition, etc. etc. etc.


Buy used. Buy used, modded skis. Save WAY more money that way.


If you haven't ridden an SJ, you don't really understand why everybody likes them so much more. It's better at freestyle/freeride and in my opinion is just more fun for weekend rec riding at the lake. My roommate has a stock legal (everything that can be done and still be legal) SXR and it's a blast to ride. But... I still prefer the SJ.

Just like my HX as compared to a Blaster. The HX is awesome on a buoy course, but other than that it's kinda boring. Now a blaster on the other hand... It's fun no matter where/what you are doing.

the reason so many people have to ask this question is they have not ridden a properly set up surf ski in the surf.

if you want to do something other than that then sure maybe its not that great a difference in skis.

anyone that says they have ridden a sj and was not impressed has obviously not ridden a well set up ski. I have ridden skis that I was told were awesome and was hugely disappointed. so when you compare you have to make sure of what you are really comparing. just because someone says there sj is the :):):):)t, it could just be plain :):):):)ty and not "da :):):):)t"

i have to agree with you tom21. iv rode a couple of skis that the owners have thrown alote of cash at and they still run like crap. iv even had the oppertunity to ride a well built ricketer and was not impressed. some people have to much money and not enough since. i get one part at a time to see what the real difference is in each and every part does for performance. iv spent the last 3 years riding a trying new parts and fine tuning carbs and pipes and spending countless hours doing it myself and not just throwing money at it because its the cool thing to have.

Superjets are super reliable! Yamaha pwcs in general are more reliable then and other brand. The super jet hull has not changed much since they started putting in the 701 back in 94.
The engine is almost the same (except for a different case) and still used in the newest model. These skies just work and they work great. I personal have a 94 SN that I picked up 2nd hand after I blew my crank seals in a 94 750 sx. I have never had a problem with my SN, unlike my 750sx which had countless. My buddy picked up a SN that was pretty much running on one cylinder and the ski still ran try to get a kaw to do that!

Several years ago I could find like new Superjets for $700-$1500. Now a POS is that much. Currently the latest fad is more Superjet friendly so they bring more.
