ok so i take it out and it runs strong for 10 min. then it goes into like a limp mode and wont take a load it will only idle. if the throttle is depressed, it boggs down and shuts off.
so, i clean the carb, replace the spark plugs, drain tank, replace fuel filter, replace check valve, runs fine on trailer. So, i go back in the water and it runs strong for 10 min. then it boggs again....tonight ill cut back the spark plug wires to make sure im getting enuff spark....it seems to be electrical, when something gets hot.. i was told the coils dont usually go bad, its cooling well, the pisser is warm but not burning my hand. Man i searched and googled till my eyes bugged out.
i just want to ride this piece for more than 10 min. what else????
coil?
stator?
cdi?
carb? (seems to operate fine until it gets hot)
no exhaust leak that i can see
(compression good i think) its a sbt 701 motor with low hrs on it.
anyboy smart enough to fix this mother gets my utmost respect and i owe you one.
thankz guys

Sound electrical to me, if it was a water leak I don't think it would run 10 mins, maybe 1 minute or 2.
If you disconnect the overheat sensor (pink wire off of cdi, unplug it and tape it up so there no chance of it shorting out) and still does it, replace the stator.

ok thankz fellas. i was going to disconnect the temp sensor but i dont want the ski to overheat and blow. as far as a water leak goes, it seems to take on water a little while sitting. cant find any holes in hull. (patched a crack under fuel tank, no leak there anymore.) could have sworn i heard water flowing in bottom of craft. will a leak around the pump cause the ski to stall out? there are times where it only ran a minute or 2.
well i cut back the stock wires from the coil, alot of people say its the crappy wires that yamaha uses...they break inside the wire and cause weak spark at load.
ill disconnect the temp sensor and see if its the stator. when i run it on the trailer it runs cool but it gets hotter than it does on the water before it cuts off.... so i guess it wont overheat in the water? i hope its the temp sensor.
i guess ill run it for a few minutes and park it and see if the head will make a drop of water boil...if its that hot it s too hott right?
sorry im usually pretty good with my skis. this yamaha has me stumped. ill be sure to post up how i fix it so anyone having similar problems will know.
thankz for the help
see you on the water....if its only for 10 min

Is your pisser hot, like boiling water hot? If not, you are fine to run it, just keep an eye on it in case you do have a mechanical issue. No need to drop water on your head to check temp, there's water in your head, so if it's that hot, you'll have steam/boiling water coming from your pisser.

As far as running it on the trailer and it gets hotter, that's because you only have air in the cooling circuit, air doesn't carry heat like water does. Be careful how long you run it on the trailer, that overheat sensor doesn't work without water.

ahh yes more superjet wisdom thank you. i have a flush kit and i run the ski on the trailer with water running through the head. i noticed that running it dry on trailer it takes full throttle fine. after i turned the water on, i heard a distinct bogg when i gagged the throttle. after some tuning and after i took off the gas tank and the waterbox and reassembled them, it ran strong on trailer (no bog) with water running. i was like hell yes i fixed it....took it in the water, ran perfect for 10 min. then limp mode again.
gonna disconnect temp sensor and try cut back wires today.
is it possible that the carb maybe my problem still? it functions properly before the ski bogs out it seems.
arrrrggg i wanna ride

sounds like a stator man i had the same problem a few months ago but mine lasted like 20 min before it would crap out, if ya let it cool down will it run again.

yeah ive ran it on the trailer and the water with the hood off and on. i cut back the plug wires and cleaned the handlebar switch and now it acts like the solenoid is blown again. i guess im back two square 1. will a bad stator cause the solenoid to crap out?
im thinkiin stator.
it looks like i can acess the stator without pullig the engine....is this tru? dang. well i hope i get this piece running sometime this summer...well i guess it doesnt matter. its always summer in florida
