or semi-permenantly make rails down the back of your car so you can winch the ski directly out of the water ontop of the car

yes a roof rack made by thule. My tailgate on my truck is nearly the same level as the roof on my car so I figure no xtra lifting. We woulndnt have to walk it over the car either just lift it parallel to car and sit it on the edge of the rack and slide it over. Tho it may be bit akwardbut then again this not gonna be for the every day hauling, just an idea for long distance trips to events to save gas and stay light loaded versus pulling a trailer. It will be silly cool rather than super functional.
semi-permenant rails would be a silly cool too but I don't know about modding the beamer to be a trailer. I see lots of damage to the car going that route. Plus I would be using the bmw all the time then to haul the ski rather than for road trips. I do have a trailer but the idea here is light, compact and save gas.

install a receiver hitch and fab up a frame arching over your trunk and back window, add a detachable ramp like mine on the back about waist high when loading solo.

Or you could cut the back out and remove the trunk lid and the back seat and cover the dash with hydroturf. You would have an original.... Oh wait nevermind

tested it out this weekend, my beat body after a few hours of riding was able to crank it onto the bed relatively easily. highway travel is worry free, the truck actually rides better with weight in the back anyways. I have enough room beside the ski for 10gal of pre-mix , 2 toolboxes and my lifejacket on one side and the ramp/winch on the other side.
