When to ride

For you guys who dont have wet suits when will you start riding. My dads rule was you can go to the lake if the water temp and air temp combined are 140. I wanna hear your rules or when you start ridin.

it depends on how man you are lol last year i went the second day the lake unfroze with a wetsuit. that was maybe a half hour ride. i started goin without the wetsuit about a month after, idk what the water temp was but the air was but the air was about 75 - 80???

I hit the water as soon as enough ice clears for a launch. I wear a slippery sub Zero dry suit for a ride or two and then switch to a slippery Matrix. Ride length depends on the day. I've had to ride longer because the ice shifted and blocked the ramp and once had to call it a day because there was too much ice built up in my tray to stand anymore. Even at these lengths I only get about a 5 month riding season if I'm lucky.
You gotta do what you gotta do to ride.

Recently I was offered a chance to move to South Carolina where I can ride year round and I was all over it. :thewave:

We stop riding when the temp gets below freezing at night and start riding again when it doesn't anymore.

Looks like we'll start riding again in February this year.

You need to be able to survive in the water if you have a break down.

I don't care if it's 90F and the water is 50F (your combined 140F), you will succumb to hypothermia quickly in those conditions without a wetsuit, and still will with a wetsuit, just a long time.

Just plain me....

That is so true & many people seem to ignore that fact.

I always wear a shorty at a mimimum if I'm going to be far away from shore due to hypothermia. Even if the water is only 70 degrees farenheit you are fubared if you're in the water for more than a couple hours.

I wear a full slippery suit, gloves, and booties, but it's pretty thin, so it's only good for about 60 degrees. If I had a slippery float coat on top it would probably be good down to freezing.

A guy I work with is big into slalom skiing. He told me his rule is the air + water temp. has to be greater than 100. And this is without a suit. It may be a little different for skis, especially if your going alone.

You northern guys are nuts!! I don't care if the air temp is 80...if the water temp is only 50 I don't want to get in that water WITH a wetsuit. Heck I'm still trying to generate enough courage to go ride in Daytona with air and water temps around 60.

A good drysuit is the key to any late season riding. I would have died a few years back without one after spending almost an hour in a 54 deg lake. My late season rides are quick and close to shore and the launch. Any extended riding in a cold body of water regardless of season or air temps and I wear the drysuit. I own a Seadoo so breaking down is inevitable, plan for the worst and hope for the best. Ride Smart, Ride Fun and Ride Often.
