Whatzit worth ? . . . . .

I guess this is as good a place as any to pose this question so here goes:

I have a crap load of parts laying around that I've been slowly ebaying and trading here and there, I have been squirrling away enough parts to build up a really decent freeride ski. I bought a bare hull this summer that already has Tubbie II's on it for just this purpose.

Here's my dilemma . . . . . with what SJ parts are going for these days it may actually be more profitable to part everything out instead of building the complete ski for the sole purpose of selling it.

Here's what I'd have if I built the ski the way I want to. . . . .

'98 Roundnose with:

4mm or 6mmStroker .............dual 44's
Factory "B" Pipe ..................Reed spacer
MSD enhancer ....................Riva Billet Girdled head
Lightened flywheel ...............Ported cases
Carbon reeds

Tubbie II's............................Footholds
New Turf .............................Solas large hub pump
"D" cut plate.........................Shortened handle pole
UMI Steereing ......................O degree wide bars
Handholds in stock hood

Custom paint with graphics

Don't factor in outside labor or parts costs. I have most of this stuff already and I do all my own work . . . . . . Paint included.

What it comes down to is if it's worth enough finished to justify the time and energy spent to build it. The hull is real clean, I just need to remove the decals, fix a couple of minor knicks and scratches, scuff and paint.

I realize that a lightweight hood and cowl plus an aluminum pole would help the value a bunch but until I find a deal them this is the current "recipe" I have to work with.

SO . . . whatzit worth ? . . . . . . .

You have both 4mm & 6mm? So it is a mag pump? If you sell the 4mm stroker crank I may be interested? I would also be interested in the ported cases. If your looking to make $$$$ I would say part it out, if you want to do a build just for the fun of it then build it and get same $$$ and be out the labor you put in it.

I actually have two 6mm cranks . . one long rod, one short rod and the 4mm which is actually a 4.5mm made by Engine Trix. They used to call the 4.5mm a "cheater crank" because it's built with modified stock crank throws and it's as much stroke as you can go without case mods. Looking at it it looks like a stock crank and cases.

The reason why I said 4mm or 6mm is because all three cranks need to be rebuilt . . . . I'd just have to decide which one I was going to use.

I may have an extra set of ported 62t cases . . . . . I'll have to look around a little and let you know.

Negative on both . . . .

Hull is stripped bare, clean and dry though . . . . . be easy enough to throw a layer of glass in it an install a scupper.

At least from witnessing here on the boards, I don't think many skis are selling for more than $4000.00, even though they do seem to be sought after. Therefore, I disagree with the $4500 suggestion (please, that's just my opinion, so no offense). If it looks clean and has a decent finish, I would think you could readily sell it for around 3000-3500.

You have to consider the likelyhood of selling it in your geographical area or you have to then knock off at least $500.00 due to shipping (the buyer will likely take the entire outlay, ski and shipping, into account).

Looking at your parts list, the two biggest $ bringer-inners are the pipe (~$450 if in decent shape) and the hull/hood/pole combo ($500-$1000).

I would say that if you have the time, build it up and expect to get at around$3000. I don't think you will net $3000 in the parts that you have listed.

A suggestion though, if you do choose to build it. There are a few places that you could sub some stock parts and sell the aftermarket parts, for example, you can easily pick up a stock turnplate for under $30.00 and sell the UMI steering for $50-$75.

Good luck,

Joe

Of course everyone wants you to part it out. They all want another B-pipe onthe market.

I do a lot of parting out of mountain bikes. My specialty is Cannondale. The way it works with them (and it carries over to any vehicle) is that you can buy and part out high-end bikes and make money. The assembled bike is worth more in parts. You have to be careful with the low- and mid-end bikes as their components are not worth that much as the parts are not as valuable and in their cases, the assembled bike is worth more.

I would classify the parts and hull that you have listed similar to a mid-grade bike and it's a tough call that really depends on how much available time you want to invest in building it up.

I agree with njfl.

Most of the boats I see here have (in parts alone) 10K+ (granted all the parts are new) but they never sell over 5K

In your case just your hull, pipe, and crank would come to 2K.
All the other stuff in the hull and parts will for sure put you way above the 4K marker. (just my 0.02 cents)

i had a million parts laying around trying to build a cool square nose for a back up ski.also had a blaster that i bought to just have to sell later and play on while buying and selling parts. took a risk sold most all and ended up with a round nose super jet with a brand new stroker.i was sick of working on skis and bought one someone else put all their time and money in.much easier but damn selling all those parts on ebay sucks.

Hmmmmmm . . . . . I already have a set of Tubbie II's to put on 'Ol Blue and an SXR project going so maybe the best thing to do is have a big ebay blowout in the Spring.

What do you think a freshly painted hull with Tubbie II's footholds and fresh turf would be worth ?

Thanks for all the input, by the way . . . . . .

If you add new foam then I would say the hull is worth 1500 (Granted it has a title).
What year is the hull?
I would hold out till next season, however selling all that stuff is a pain.

4mm or 6mmStroker - each crank about 400 bucks or so
.............dual 44's- from mani to carbs and f/a around 250
Factory "B" Pipe-500/550 if great conditon
..................
Reed spacer
MSD enhancer-200
....................
Riva Billet Girdled head-140
Lightened flywheel-Stock lightned- 80, RAD/TBM etc- anywhere from 250-450 depending on brand
Ported cases- your better off selling a compete motor, but cases alone, about 350
Carbon reeds-125 for the set.

Bare hull- with the tubbies and footholds etc- 1000-1500 assuming its titled
Solas large hub pump-Mag pump? 400
"D" cut plate- depeneds on brand- from 40-125
........................
.Shortened handle pole- what kind? stock pole? if so, around 125
UMI Steereing-150
......................
O degree wide bars-25

And then a complete ported stroker motor- Would be worth a pretty penny, Depending on all the info, hours, bore, cylinder, who ported it, all that fun stuff...

Went down the list fast.

But you also have to rememer, you have all the little stuff.
S/S switch- 60
Fuel tank- 75
Motor mounts- 50
Pole spring- 10
Pole mount- 40(if stock)
Reduction and steering nozz- depend on brand
Throttle cable/choke cable- 40 for both
steering cable- 65
Throttle- Assuming its a finger and aluminum- 30
Motor bed plates- 40
Flywheel cover- 20
Waterbox-100(if stock), if AM of course its more $$
long exhaust hose- 50
stator- 80
Ebox- 150

and the list goes on and on and on...

More money in parting it...

EDIT_ Noticed the TOTAL LOSS in the photo- thats a big money maker too.. 800-1000, mmaybe even 1200 depending on a few things...
