What's the best way to create these?

OK so I'm tinkering again....

Got standard foot holds (Wamilton/Malone type I think) and I'd like to create the type pictured below - I've just stripped off the mats and I'm looking to make a start..

Any suggestions on material (Glass/cloth/metal gauze etc) - best way to turf it, how many layers og cloth, how far back in the foot hold to enclose etc.

Not sure who's ski this is - are there any more pics anywhere? - nice job BTW

Cheers

Jim

yea, get some styrofoam from wherever, make a mold of the shape you want just a tad smaller then needed, then put a couple layer of elmers glue on the styrofoam to protect it from being eaten, then glass mat over it, and dissolve the styrofoam with gasoline or cut it out.

Have you looked at the waterdog footholds. They set your foot out to the side and face your foot foreward not out. They are super reasonable on price just $99 and all you will have to do is drop a piece of cloth straight down from the foothold.. super easy to do.

Look at This Thread for what they look like and links.

Man - the acetone and foam route sounds sano! - shame I already started... I used a peice if stock exhaust tube quashed into the hold to get the round shape and coated it with release agent.. not as neat as the foam method though :((

Its half turfed now & looking good - will post some pics of the finished job.

Cheers

Butti owns that boat now.... I totally hate those holds soooooo bad. WHy would you want that?? Just wondering...

You can't ride any way but w/ your feel locked in the holds... try to do a can can, it's a pain in the ass... just fit your current holds to your feet better and be done w/ it...

Slut,

Feet have come out of my current holds a couple of times in stabs and inverts and toes have hit the front of the tray and I've gone between the pole and the hood on a few occasions - funny to watch but not very comfortable:biggrin: need to work on my stabs, just thought this might help keep me in the tray..

Did try adding padding to the foot holds (extra layer of turf on roof of each hold) but my foot was too tight then - I'll probably grind these off by the W/E and be another $100 into a third set of mats if it doesn't work!...

How do you keep yourself locked in when you go inverted? - stand on your tiptoes? or lift your toes up? push outwards? or do your feet just stay put?

Push outwards and they just stay put. If you are coming out its probably mostly your style or very loose foot holds. Footholds only assist you they dont prevent you from coming out. Just keep practicing. Post a pic of your footholds. I like the rickters the best.

I`m sorry but footholds like that scare the bajesuses out of me. I like the ability to come out ouf the foot hold if you come done wrong. If you start to come down wrong and start twisting your body there goes your knee. POP!!!

I kick em in before I go toward the wave and don't really think about it... I would say to do what Brad said and give some thought to keeping your feet outward againd the inside of the hold. I ride flat footed in my holds.. I recall having to use my toes a few times to grab when it felt like I was comming out, but I just don't have that issue really...

tip: when I do my turf, I make a ramp down into my hold w/ layered padding... this way, my heel is fully padded, but my toes are on like only one layer of padding... it feels really good that way and my feet slip right in like a slipper... also, having the heel up higher puts a bind on the top of your foot allowing you to control how much pressure you want to apply to keep you feet in..
