its not an sx, the sx was 1990 - 94
looks like an 88 or 89 with that exhaust outlet.
the last 2 diggets of the vin will tell you the year
if i remember correctly on the intake side of the cylinder just below the cylinder head there should be engine displacement in the casting or a part number you could use as a reference

yeah this is a late 80's js 550 not an sx.
the 550 and even the 440 changed vary little. All the parts on all 40s and 50s are the same or interchangable as assemblies.

there were some changes in the exhaust systems and the 550 got a 44mm carb in 85 i think. other than that and the the 550 having larger pistons/cylinders the main 440 550 difference is the pump.
the 440 has an axle flow pump and the 550 has a mixed flow pump. the 440 pump is better for RPM and flow. most of the old race machines use the 440 pump with a 550 motor.
i think the 300 uses the 440 pump but i am not sure cuz i never messed with them, they were too slow.

Ok. I bought an 87 550 this summer and had the engine tuned up but the hull is cracked and real beat up from the previous owner so im gonna transfer all my stuff over to that hull and depending on how bad the motor is my friend might re build it and take all the guts to put in his 89 300. It has the different body style though...
