I have heard that one of the Seadoo starters fit the SJ if you change the back cap of your original starter, and they are like 1/3 the price of the Yamaha starter.

I just don't remember which Seadoo starter it is.:banghead:

You can do what I did, rebuild the OEM one.

The starter motors are brushed meaning after so many years the brushes which are in physical content with the thingy (cant remember exact name, think its the commutater) wear down to the bone, and in my case, were completely gone.

However, I got the stuff to rebuild it from John at JSS

Bearing/bushing
Case seals (important! He has the OEM, 'square' seals that you need)
Brush plate

It was around 100-120 all said and done, but I get the OEM quality, its been cranking good for the past season (and Im pretty hard on it too), and the toughest part was depressing all the brushes at the same time to get it in. I took some pics if you wanna see them, the old brushes vs. new was almost undescribable in the difference. I ride in brackish water, so that might make the difference, however I think its doing good and will continue to do so.

When I sealed it up (part most people think isnt possible), I just put the seals on, bolts in, painted sealer everywhere, then tightened up the bolts with loc-tite to the point just before they start to crush the seals. After that I painted it with a few layers of Rustoleum to add to the seal and aid in rust prevention. Works great and wasnt too hard to do! If I had to do it again, I probably would add some JB-weld because I know that stuff isnt giving up. I look at it this way, the case and shaft pretty much cant wear down, the brushes take about 8-15 years (depending on use), so I'm never gonna need to get in there again.

If you dont want to do this, then feel free to send me the old motor, I'll take it off your hands

The consensus will be go OEM (expensive) and some will say ebay (cheap $99). Many say the rebuilds just tend to leak and end up costing more in the long run.

I have replaced the brush assembly in starters before with success but you have to also pay attention to the commutator groove depth and minimum diameter of the commutator. Also you should inspect the front bearing and seal along with the rear bushing. Unless the starter has been spun to death by a hung bendix the bearings / bushings ususally look good. To avoid leaks you must replace the housing square ring seals as they become compressed and harden. In a nutshell you can prolly rebuild it by replacing the brushes and seals for less than $60-70 and get some extra years out of it. Go to the online yamaha parts finder and get part numbers that any Yamaha dealer can get. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/waverun...dHMvaG9tZS5hc3B4/Parts Catalog/starthere.aspx

I have used the MES and they seem to work fine. No problems so far. I would buy one again if I could not rebuild the OEM cheaper.

keefer, I did that, but 100-120 included the bearing and dust seal and o-ring for the front, plus bushing for the back. I did it all because I didnt want to fool with it again. Next time I do a rebuild, I'm using JB-weld to seal it, because I'll probably never need to reopen it again, and I can be damn sure water wont get in then!

Sounds like you did a hella good job on the rebuild. I will do the same thing as long as it is cost effective. You can't beat the OEM stuff.

Stay as far away from a Goki as you can! That goes for their bendixes too!

I am a Kawie guy but I rebuilt a few starters in my day, never a problem. Just make sure you measure the armature/commature? min diiameter where the brushes contact. Also grease/replace all bearings and seals.

I have seen the nose break off of starters a few times too.
