What should I do with this old square nose?

I have a 62T swap and my buddy has a 61X single carb, both in SN skis. Both high comp heads, bpipes, mag pumps, etc. They pull basically identical. Those single carb motors are just fine and way easier to tune. I wouldn't do the swap again personally.
I agree a 61X with a pipe and more compression runs just fine , I have done several of them on older Superjets that came with 650's , the one that just left here had one with a Riva Red pipe , stock compression , stock everything else, it ran really well , just a nice clean older very solid ski ..

Sounds like another 61x and a pipe is what it needs. What about the prop? Should I switch to a 9/15?

Yes especially if you shorten it a few inches. The sweet spot is having the bars even with the hood seal. Then add a quick steer and straight bar setup and it'll feel like a totally different machine. Stock square pole is a big weak point on the square nose

How hard is that riding position on your back? I've got multiple spine injuries from other extreme sports so riding hunched over would be really painful.

Also how much would it take to convert it? I'm guessing it would need a new bracket?

I am going to be honest here straight bars are not for everybody, I have ridden a few skis with them and I gave them back to owners within minutes .

Now granted I have carpal tunnel in both wrists so maybe I am the exception rather than the rule , but that being said the straight bars put your wrists in an unnatural position which will aggravate any problems you already have .

This is what they tell you do on motorcycles when you want to find the right bar bend , close your eyes , now reach out like you are reaching for the bars , where do your hands end up at , that's what bend bars you need whatever bend will meet where your hands are , that's my opinion take it for what it's worth .[/QUOTE]

If your back hurts you will want to be standing straight with the ski planed. Adjust the pole length so your toes are at the front of the tray when going 20mph or faster. Square nose poles and turnplates are at least 3" too long, especially if you are much over 150lbs,

@streetroc I think you should keep the SN.

Yesterday I got to ride my buddy's SN 650 with a Coffman Pipe. It was definitely slower than I remember my wife's SN with a 701 61X single carb and stock exhaust.

But in comparison with the 2019 SJ - which feels really locked down to the water - the SN bottom hull is much more slippery, easy to slide and it slides in a more graceful way than the FX-1 slides.

My wife loves her SN and I get it. It is much more playful than the 2019 SJ.

I have only briefly ridden the 1996 to 2007 RN SJ which apparently has the same bottom hull as the SN, so I can see why people like those RN years.

Can you put a Factory B-Pipe on the SN and then when you get a chance, put a 61X single carb 701 in the ski? If so, I think you will develop an appreciation of the hull and even more so with more power.

Yeah I'm definitely keeping it and that looks like the best plan. 61X with a b pipe. Maybe even a high comp head and a 9/15 prop? I also need to look into the cost of an RN pole conversion to see if I can squeeze that into a $2k budget. Looks like about $800 for a stock 61x, about $700 for a used pipe, and $300 for a prop. Figure in another few hundred for miscellaneous stuff to finish the project and I'm right at the limit.

Also, I've grown to love the way the FX1 slides. It doesn't mush into it at all, it just breaks loose and snaps around. Sometimes I can even do a perfect 180 and slide backwards for a second before I catch it and do a wheelie in the opposite direction. I doubt my old SJ could ever do that

No, you will be able to do that with your SN SJ.

Even with the rear exhaust (unlike her former 440 Super Stock) my wife (but not I) can do a 180 to 360 degree tail stands with her SN SJ.
