What would make a one way valve go bad?

I had one on my gas tank and it worked good for a while then it pop/broke and could blow through both ways. My buddy gave me one and I tried blowing through it and it only went one way. Ran it today and now it will blow a little thru one way then stop. Is there something in my motor or my setup that would make them break? like to much pressure in the tank?

my one way is oem and it doesn't let any pressure out. everytime i crack my gas cap you can hear the pressure escape which is what you want to keep all the gas lines primed during riding. I crack my cap when in storage to keep the pressure off my seals.
