Everytime someone replies "did you try the search function?" I wanna cram my phone down their throat.

I can have the exact title of the thread or an exact phrase from the thread and it still comes up with everything but the thread I am looking for.

I seem to have better luck from a computer than my mobile so peehaps they use different search engines?.?.?.

Many times I just use google to search, just add the site keyword to limit the results to the x. example: hood site:x-h2o.com

When vbulletin switched to version 4, they redid the search setup and it basically sucks. I've tweaked things to give more weight to exact matches, etc etc and it hasn't really helped much honestly.

Using google, search use: site:x-h2o.com blah blah blah

I had much better luck using the site search function after setting the default search preferences:
only search titles
sort results by date, descending
then click the go button next to "save search preferences"

Well google did the trick, one hit and it was the exact thread so that is good to know.

Will set my preferences up as well and try that too.

Thanks for the tips, maybe this should be a sticky?

"[keywords] site:x-h2o.com"

is what i use for every forum. Doubt the keyword before or after the [keyword]:website makes a difference but I usually have good luck.
