What does cut back impeller mean?

reduced cavitation,maybe more brapppp! the cut back bring the prop closer to the vein section resulting better hook and less cavition
 
cut back means material has been removed from the back of the prop, allowing the trailing edge blade to sit closer to the pump veins.5mm cut back means it sits 5mm closer to the veins than an uncut prop. the less gap between the blades and the pump veins, means less slippage of the prop/better hook up.

Buzzard's explanation is spot on, I have also heard that smaller engines may work better with the edge of the blades being a bit further from the stator veins (non-cutback). The logic was the lower hp engine is allowed to more quickly rev to a higher rpm and get on the pipe sooner to make power quicker. Where in a high hp application you probably want the most hookup you can get (cutback).

I'm no expert, just what I've been told.

How far are the trailing edges from the stator in a OEM 144 setup?

the veins are angled on the stock pump, so it goes from less distance on the outside edge to more towards the center. the distance is also going to change depending on the pitch of the prop. the bigger the prop, the more the outside edge is tilted back towards the veins. mag pump veins are straight across, but the distance is still going to change with the props pitch.
