Other What do i need to order? fiberglassing

Im working on getting things together for my fx1 pump swap and i just realized i havent thought about what glass/resin i need. Do I need to order some resin from us composites or will cheap polyester resin work since the bottom is already glass and not SMC?
Also since im just grinding and then reinforcing a small aread should i just use some cheap chop mat (they have plenty at homedepot!) or should i order something instead?

It would be quite convenient if i could just use the polyester resin and cheap mat from homedepot but i dont mind placing yet another order if needed. I have always read to use the epoxy resin but that was always because of the SMC i think

Anyone have any insight? I know there are tons of threads on glassing im just not sure if i can use different materials seeing is i have a fiberglass bottom deck

lastly does anyone have a good thread with info on the best method for cutting out and then replacing a tray? Im fairly sure i can manage cutting it out but im not sure the best method of replacing (ive seen people reglass the tray in and ive seen people lay new trays?) Any suggestion as to how much resin/glass i will need for this? Im hoping to do it all in the week iim out of school so i really need to be prepared and the only thing i know of local is polyester resin and cheap glass

30 views and no one knows if i can use polyster resin on a fx1 hull? I suppose i can just order the epoxy

Still need some insight as to the tray replacement/reinstallation

You can use poly on the FX hull......that's one of it's charms!

Use epoxy, from what I've read polyester resin's secondary bond strength is very poor no matter the case

I feel as if im getting mixed signals. Reguardless of the type of resin am i ok to use the type of glass you can buy at places like homedepot/small autoparts store?
It doesnt have much of a description as to what type or glass is it but i have some around the house already i believe.

Both posts are correct. I'm sure epoxy has a better secondary bond strength, but you can successfully use polyester. I've used poly on 5 FX projects and it has never failed. If you use epoxy it will work great too. Folks have to use epoxy on superjets due to the lower deck being SMC, but the FX is all glass (top and bottom deck) so you can successfully use poly.

The most critical factor in geting a decent secondary bond regardless of material is preparation and bond area. The surfaces must be clean and roughed up for adhesion. You also need to ensure there is sufficient bond area or overlap. As far as what type of cloth, I like to use 1208 biax primarily with tear offs of cloth matt for blending/feathering. US composites would be best for your materials (resin and cloth).
