Freestyle Wearing a helmet with your contacts

I have been into water sports my whole life and my contacts never seem to bother me but when I am riding in a motocross helmet they tend to fall out, get water behind them etc because I am not able to clear them so to speak (for non contact people, basically lift your eye lid and blink). I have considered motocross goggles but I feel like the first time you fall the goggles are going to fill up with water... Anyone found a solution?

I used to have a similar problem when I went surfing. Most surfers I know, open their eyes underwater when duck diving.

I never do b/c I wear contacts...I squeeze hard sometimes and have had them pop out before but that was a long time ago.

I tried a bunch of different types before I settled on the Acuvue 2's. They did the trick for me...They seemed to fit my eye better than any other brand or type that I have tried.

I have flown planes since I was young, so my eyesight was very important to me.

My point is that I very rarely sleep in my contacts( drunk it seems when I do)...not even the new fancy stuff...it disrupts sleep for me and I would think that it can really damage your eyes during REM and other phases of sleep. I don't care about being able to sleep in them at all. I take mine out every night unless I am lit and can't function...HA

I wear them in all sports, including MX, when I used to ride. I have had no problems with th ACUVUE 2's.

Just take your prescription down to your eye doc, and see if you can't sample as many types as you can. I'm sure you'll find a set that will be perfect for you to ride in.

You could even find a pair for riding and some other type when you're not.

Long winded but I hope it helps.

I've used a number of different contacts since 2005 with a motocross style helmet (multiple makes/models) without issue.

Get lasik eye surgery. BEST think I have ever done and the best money I have ever spent. My wife, brother, and I had it done all around the same time and they say the same thing. If you are a good candidate for it I would seriously think about. My contacts drove me crazy and now I have 20/12 vision. I know it wasn't the answer you were looking for but if you haven't looked into it, I would check it out.

Thanks for the reply and I just switched contacts as matter fact to the Acuvue 2's and I love them outside wearing a helmet in the water. I was using the Biofinity but I had the same problem with water getting in behind those as well.

I have considered it the only thing holding me back is I know a few people who have had lasik and still have to wear glasses.

I would research and find a reputable doctor and then ask your eye doctor about it and see if he thinks you are a good candidate. But I understand your skepticism. I was unsure about it at first but I went to a well know doctor who had done over 50,000 surgeries.

Excuse my skepticism, but 50,000 surgeries for one doctor? Even assuming a 40 year* career with 250 working days each year, that's 5 surgeries per day, every day, for 40 years.

*Note that 40 years is not realistic, as the first LASIK like surgery was performed in 1989. So you're looking at 24 years, max. Now you're up to over 8 surgeries every day.

Cooper Vision's Avaira. I only wear contacts when I go jet skiing and I have never had a problem in the past 4 years with them. Not once. Actually, I wasn't aware any brand contact would be an issue in the water. Lift my eye lid and blink? What is that crap? I think you need to try a few different brands. Go to a good eye doctor, have them do a contact eye exam and have him/her suggest a few brands to try. Keep in mind not everyone's eye is the same.

Thanks for the recommendation. I think I go to a good eye doc, I may have to shop for a new one haha

My contacts are decent about staying on, there's usually some furious blinking going on if I take a face-first landing but they never want to come out. I do wear goggles in the surf because the salt stings. I use Spex goggles, they are fantastic. Made for water sports, they have a floating lens so they do not hold water and they never fog up.
