no take off the rideplate, then undo the hoses on the pump only. undo the steering cable and then there are 4 bolts at the top of the pump that bolt upwards into the bottom of the tray.

i stand corrected, i figured he would figure it out when he couldnt get to the back bolt with the hoses still on

The midshaft is original and looks like new. I took it off to inspect and it spins free with no hessitation and the stock rubber seal seems to look great but I also used some permatex Blue RTV gasket stuff when I put it back on!
Tom21....so your saying I will have to tear up my turf to access the bolts for the pump seal

I will have to take it apart tomorrow!
So the only possibility is either the midshaft or this pump seal thing?? any other culprits people have heard of??
It cavitates really really bad!

The impeller looks like original but new like everything else on the ski. can an impeller slip or be striped out?

Good deal, Dirk, a good way to figure out how to take these things apart is go to Riva Yamaha site, parts finder for your ski has exploded drawings and you should be able to figure it out from there.

The guy was selling both the skis, I didnt want another 650sx so I left that behind. He bought the skis 4 years ago and never really rode them much(wife didnt like, very young children). He only bought them cause when he was younger he wanted one and now hes in his late 30's and needs to buy some couches.

You're officially on my bad side now...:spank:

No!! Everything will be done from underneath the ski, the only thing you'll be using the turf for in this application is to hold your beer.

What do you think? Does that look normal to you?

Take the pump out, reinstall the seal properly, reinstall the pump.
Don't doughnut it up.

EDIT: Also, don't be surprised to not get rid of all the cavitation. The impeller is responsible for a great part of it. Get a stainless impeller.

I just bought another Superjet 650 today cause it was close and a good deal I think?? Its pretty clean and has 160 psi compression in each cylinder.
Paid $600

Bought it cause th hull is in really really good shape!!

The only thing that is wrong is that is cavitates(cavitation). What is a common cause of cavitation on a 1990 SJ650?? The impeller looks to be good with no bends or chips. Im thinking splines??? any ideas??

I am really new to wrenching, what does cavitate mean?

Nah, it's normal, just put some silicone over it.
What are those scratches on the wear ring from? :wall:

Matt E......so your saying I can reuse the same seal?? should I apply any blue rtv gasket maker to it??

Take it off and see if it looks good. You know, round and rubbery.
If it does, reuse it.
I never put silicone/gasket maker on mine. Not saying it's the wrong thing to do, I just don't do it.
