I have been looking for a stand up for about 4 months now and @Burton has been a huge help and helping me find one on craigslist and telling me what to look for etc. I finally ended up finding a pair in Redding. A '91 SJ SN with custom paint and 701cc engine 61x, an '85 Kawa 550 and trailer. Before taking them out I went through them best I could with my limited knowledge and the help of the interwebs and forums. ( I have some basic small engine knowledge repairing chainsaws at my old job)

I put in new batteries, spark plugs, new spark plug boots, (and verified spark), cleaned out the gas tanks, fuel filters, checked compression(150 in both), checked all of the bolts tightened all of the hose clamps, installed a lanyard kill switch on the 550, greased the zerks, wd40 all the cables etc. And installed a trailer hitch on my civic so could tow them.

Wasn't able to get the kawa started at my house so I poured some gas down the carb and it kicked over for just a second, poured down some more gas and still couldn't start it, figured I flooded it. So no big deal I would just drive there and try it again. Went to the gas station and while I was putting gas in the 550 the damn threads for the gas cap broke into pieces when I pulled out the gas nozzle! :eek:uch:

Ok no big deal I still have the SJ and I started it a few days ago and let it idle for about 10 seconds so I know it runs. Get to the Afterbay, launch the ski, prime it, go to start it, and nothing...:sad2: :eek:uch:
So I pulled out the plugs and dried them off, put them back in, gave it full throttle and after about 20 seconds or so it finally kicked over so I jumped on and just kept giving it throttle! After that it would idle and everything was good.

Now onto the ridding! Started off on my belly and got onto my knees pretty easily. Found that the faster you are going the easier it is. After a few turns on the knees I decided to try standing, pretty hard but not to bad and b00m I am cruising standing up! Yay! :Banane09: and than it was time to turn and down I went. Holy f*$K b@llz! that water was freezing cold! Road for about 30 minutes total and got to where I could turn alright but not as well as I could on my knees. Also I was having purposing issues so am going to need to work on that. So it was awesome, I ordered a new filler for the 550, and was able to get it started once I got back home. Now I can't wait to get back out there and learn how to ride this thing well enough to pull off some tricks.

Welcome to the sport man... It's addictive... nice choice of skiis. :)

Don't get frustrated... if you can ride a 550, you can ride anything.

Post up some pics of the new boats.

The list of things you did before you took the skis out should be a sticky. Glad to hear you went over everything before taking the skis out.

Something nostalgic about hearing/ reading about the challenges and rewards new riders find in being on a standup for the first time.
Congrats brotha, welcome to the thing.

Supposed to be 76 on Friday! Also off of Larkin road it has got to be about 10+ degrees warmer than the other spot you launch from.

I am still waiting for the wiring kit. Amazon shows the wrong one for my car so I had to send the first one back. The only problem I am seeing after launching the last couple days from my buddies truck, is I am worried that water might get into my trunk. Or I will be standing in water when I get out of the car. I am thinking I am going to need a little cart or something I can push them into the water with.

how long is the tongue on the trailer? i have a single trailer and the tongue is pretty long so i was thinking i'd get away with using a car. its not that big a deal cuz i have my truck. plus throwing all your wet gear in the toolbox of the truck is nice. lol

That is a good idea! Than I pushed them up into the garage with only a slight incline. Getting them in the water would be easy but getting them back out might be some work. I will probably still try it than ask one of you fine gentleman to pull me out if I get stuck. :)

Update! found that the 550 was missing one of the primer hoses that connect it to the carb. So I installed that and put an expansion plug in the filler until I get the filler that I ordered. So hopefully I can take her out Friday. :highhorse:

Thats a tall trailer, you may have to walk it in or get a cart that you leave on the front of the trailer or something. Some of the local guys lowered their trailers a few inches by flipping the axles over the leaves.

what did ya give for them

Remember I am in California and skies cost almost double here... $2300 for the skis, trailer, two life vests, some rash guards, 2gal of 2 stroke oil and some other random marine stuff. I had to replace both batteries. But the 91 SJ came with a 61x 701 with Coffman pipe. :)

That is a great idea! I might also move the axle forward a bit to take some weight off the tongue.

Whats wrong with a tall trailer?. I fit 33s under mine to match my jeep. It rides fine and its easy to push anywhere.
