They do for cars, I know that. I am assuming that per federal regulations the boat/ski manufacturers have to do so as well. The VIN plates are all manufactured by the individual manufacturers of cars/boats per federal specs.

this is very interesting- I had a long talk with a guy at the county who was listing me for salvage and resale to keep skis from going to the landfill and I explained that a major handicap was legally taking a ski with no ID. He did some research and we kinda figured ( as he was not 100% sure) that since you can replace a motor or any other part of a ski, the hull should be allowed to be replaced. trouble is if you find a hull and get a motor - good luck trying to convince them at the dmv you are building a ski ground up.

easy to do on a trailer not so easy on a ski. ask one question and they are up your arse with a flashlight!!!!!

I would be very very careful about this, like jetaddict said call the dmv and explain this - they will get you on the right track or tell you to find another hull with papers. its only a phone call.

See, if you are listed as salvage/resale, you can apply for a title if you show you have made a diligent effort to contact the last known owner, if you have completed the proper paperwork and looked up the HIN/VIN under a special program, and contact law enforcement to verify the craft isn't stolen. You then file a petition for a title, and you can receive a salvage/rebuild title I believe. It's a long process for an individual, but a necessity for business owners like Tom. If the HIN is missing, someone from the state will issue a state generated HIN, and you slap a sticker on it, you get a rebuilt title for it, and you're legal.
