Wondering if any one has thoughts or truths for me. I am running a 61 x motor with a protec mach 1 pipe. It is suppose to have those rubber mounts but I just kind of rigged up some rubber between the mani fold and pipe and where it attaches to the head.

Question: is it possible that because I didn't have the right mounts that the vibration caused it to make the motor and midshaft vibrate tomuch and cause the striping or does it have to be misalignment that caused? Thought for sure I had it aligned right. Although when I pulled the pump a while ago there was some wear on the splines but only like 3/4 down the splines.

You most likely pushed some sand into the midshaft when the pump was reinstalled. The driveshaft tunnel is always full of sandy grease. The only way to insure the splines will last is by removing and cleaning the midshaft/tunnel every time the pump is removed. Aligning the engine also helps.
