The versaclimber is a good, kick butt workout. If you chose not to get a versaclimber as your main form of cardio exercise, anything that works your whole body is good...rowing machines, elliptical machines that incorporate the arms (not all do), swimming, etc.

Whatever you do, if you're going to spend the money on a cardio machine:
1) Make sure it doesn't hurt you. You want it to challenge you cardiovascularly, but it shouldn't feel like you're going to injure yourself if you use it all the time.
2) Select something that you'll actually use.

Again, versaclimber kicks your butt, but if you hate it and it's going to end up in the corner, it's more important to do cardio you enjoy...you'll push yourself that much harder (and intensity IS important when training for racing).

I joined a gym with some various cardio high and low impact classes. Makes me feel obligated to go get my money's worth.

I've also heard the versaclimber is the shiznit. Too tall to fit in my house, I think.

I use a versaclimber nearly everyday as my primary means of cardio. It's for sure, without question, the most hardcore machine out there for cardio and total body conditioning! However, its also the most monotonous, excruciatingly boring, and painfull machine! I will not be something you look foward to doing, however the results greatly outweigh all other machines. I can't say it realy helps a great deal with race conditioning IMHO, but its deff. a bad ass machine that will get you in shape. Nothing beats bouy time!

For anybody interested here is a link to their sport specific workouts using the versaclimber, on page 28 or 29 is the Jet Ski racing workouts for off season, pre-season, and in-season.
