UMI mounting plate bolts

So i was installing the UMI steering system on my 00'. After drilling the four 1/4" holes in the pole for the mounting plate, I went and put the 4 bolts through. The thickness of the mounting plate, handle pole, backing plate, washer and nut it seems like the bolts they give you are not long enough. You cant even get close to the nylon lock in the nut when tightning. Anyone else run into this?

Yes, on a stock pole. I ran it for a season without the backing plate and it was fine. Eventually I went to a True Value and they had stainless tapered flat head 1/4" bolts that were longer so I bought them and added the backing plate.

On most of the aftermarket poles the bolts they supply will suffice. I think they assume everyone is using a UMI or AC pole where the supplied bolts will work with the backing plate.
