UMI handlepole spring

Over the years my superjet's UMI handlepole spring has lost some of its weight-bearing ability. Its sagging pretty bad.

Has anyone tried putting a handlepole spring in a vice and reefing on it somehow to bend it the other way and give it a little more strength?

Not worth the effort just buy a new spring.

You can over flex the spring so that it will be stronger. However, the fact is that the strength will only be temporary and it'll be worse in a few months. You could just put a spacer under spring to load it a little bit more.

There's an idea, a spacer. I'll make a note to buy a new one the next time I'm in the US. (shipping and duty on items coming to Canada are 'extreme') (man i love socialism :) )

Thanks....

I agree with Mark 44.
These springs develop "memory" pretty easily. When they show signs of being "sprung" it's best just to replace them. Leaving your handle pole in the up position during down time seems to prolong spring life though...

Its tempered steel and will likely break SOON after you reinstal it if you bend it back out. If you dont mind removing the pole again later then its worth it. Too bad they dont make those springs anymore.

Check out post #146 on my SN build thread. I managed to ghetto up and make a $2 rake spring from tractor supply work really well. I don't know about longevity as I just installed it tonight but seems good.

Great thread! Jeez, I thought I was balls deep into my rebuild when I took my pump off.

I don't want to hijack my own thread here but I saw something about you having a problem wire-brushing your hull. I was going to put one of those wire brush attachments on my cordless drill to help "scrub" the inside of my hull clean before painting it (with the appliance epoxy paint you suggested a couple days ago). I used regular spray paint on it a few years ago and now it is peeling off in some places and in other places I can't GET it off. So I thought a little wire-brushing would help. Would that be a bad idea?

The wire brush is fine and I used it everywhere trying to clean off dirt, grime, flakey paint, and foam. The only problem was the previous owner let water sit in the hull for years so that fiberglass was waterlogged and the wire brush chewed it up. You should be fine if your hull is in good shape and fairly dry.

I guess duties are paid if you go over a certain amount - e.g. in Poland if it says 100 usd it will go to customs, if it is 40 usd it goes to my doorstep - no tax :)
