Tuning question

Bought a used 61x motor, used bpipe, used oem 44 w/stock f/a. I got the bpipe set with an oversized top screw at 3/4 turn and the rest closed. The 44 is at fp specs (don't remember the jets) and a 1.5n/s and 95g spring which I think is the recommendation. The ski bogs on low end, I hold the throttle for about five seconds and it takes off. I've tried 43psi popoff, 12, and 17psi and it always seems to do the same thing. I've also tried adjusting the screws all over the map although I was told 1 7/8 was the recommendation. I have cleaned and recleaned the carb and inspected the reeds but still the same thing - bogs for several seconds and takes off. Any ideas? Yes, I've read the manual :banghead: thanks,
mark

How old is your n&s?
Ooooold. How might that affect it? Popoff still measures 43-ish. Came out of a 44 off a sank '90.

Matt yeah, definitely sounds rich but I'm using fp specs on such a basic motor I didn't want to go out and get a bunch more jets if there was something deeper wrong. I do get horrible sludge spots on my driveway after running it on the hose

i would say it is rich on your low end and it takes a few seconds to clear out. too big low speed jet or leaky needle and seat might be your problem. you said you tried 43psi and it still did it....prolly means that your popoff is not the problem. can you see fuel dribbling out of your venturi when it is idling or running 1/4 throttle? this would mean leaky needle. once it clears out how long of idling does it take to make it bog again after the throttle is opened back up. how were you checking popoff....airpressure gauge.....if so is it popping nice and clean? i am no pro but this is the stuff i would check.

Haven't paid attention when the f/a was off to see if fuel was dribbling in. Don't know how long from one burst to another because it's always in a no-wake zone and/or at the ramp. Checked popoff with a gauge and no it was not a clean popoff. Guess I'll try and line up another n/s.

Also, the carb is always full of fuel when I remove the diaphram. I never noticed before if this is normal to be completely full?

On another note, how can you be sure which needle goes with which seat since the needles are not labeled?
