Transport Option For Your Ski

I know this has been done. But heres MY take on a good Idea.

I wanted a way to transport my Ski w/o hauling the trailer. OR if I were doing something where I needed to be able to haul a second trailer. ( ie. Camping and needed the dirbikes AND the ski. or going to the lake and wanted the boat and the ski. etc.)

So I started with a rear hitch mounted basket rated for 500lbs. Then I had a welder friend fab up a new receiver mount with a ball on the end . the new receiver mount is longer then the stuck basket mount and reinforced and gusseted. MONGO STRONG!:woot:

Next I went to Home Depot and started shopping PVC for my "Bunks". I ended up with more of a cradle design to help reduce the risk of it sliding. A little over kill maybe, but that's normal for me.

After some measuring and carfull assembly. I got what I feel is actually a pretty sweet set up.

the pics ate with the stock receiver since I havent gone to pick up the new one yet. But, with the exception of having a ball on it, and also putting some brake lights on it (rather not give some idiot and excuse to rear end me) this is the basic idea of what it'll look like.

haha sweet, your gonna have a train of cool shiz goin down the road, ski, bikes,ur pick up wooooh, how about puting more in the back of the truck like a quad or something  . Or if you have one of the new larger pick ups like the lincoln or escalade just put your ski in the back of one of those. But I definitly like this idea alot. It looks cool chillin on the back like that, imagine an insane pimped out ski with a crazy paint job, and a pimped out truck to match. Even add some style and flash to the mount eventually and make that match too. :cool2:

I dont know how small you think an '06 Tundra double cabs is.... but it aint no tiny truck that's for sure. The truck bed is over 3' off the ground. much further than I wanna drive into a lake to unload it. this was put together as a way to take the ski with me when I need to take other things too. Like a trailer full of dirt bikes, or a boat. I have an Aluminum single place trailer to haul it otherwise.

haha those subies rock. my buddy bought one for 200 bucks and we took that thing down a quad trail through a mud pit and accross a small river and it was still kicking... until we had to drive 10 miles on the rim

HA! Subies do rock. 4WD is nice for beach launches. It's nice being able to transport the ski without a trailer.
With the above trailer hitch setup, be sure that the right brake light is visible to low sitting cars behind you. A cop having a bad day might see that as a prime target.

nice setup you got there i was thinking of doing the same thing but kind off paranoid of the platform snaping and my sj go bye bye and hit a somebody let us know how sturdy it feels once you hook another trailer to it

Why can't you and a buddy just lift and carry your ski into the water? So you don't have to drive your truck into the lake.

Check out my rack (hubba hubba)!!!

Bought it used from a guy that had it custom made. Works great and I like that it has lights.

My $0.02. I would never put a trailer on the with the rack. Too much tounge weight. A recieving hitch is only rated for 500-600lbs.

Now all you need is a superjet

My trailer tongue weight is 1500lbs and can tow 9000lbs total weight .

I like the idea .Does anyone know where to buy one already made .

Got an SJ, just no pictures of it.
From all the research i have done, no companies make these racks any longer. Only choice is to build one or find a used one like I did.

I have had one for a couple years and with the Bow eye pined the ski can't fall off I used 2x2x.25 steel stock so it is strong enough to pull a camper behind the ski.

I have built one before but after shop time and steel which is over $200 it is rather expensive. check out my gallery for otherr pictures

cool, thats what I m looking for too. I saw the baskets too, but wasnt shure if there s enough space between, ski and car. I saw a 500 lbs. for 135 $ which isnt bad. The only thing I m scared of is, somebody bumping into the back...... oohh I would cry and have to kill somebody.

ok, but first I need my own car here :woot:

I made one of these things myself out of the 2x2x.25 sq stock also.. IMO I would not trust the hitch carrier conversions that many have done. The material they use is very thin walled compard to the material the receiver & hitch itself uses, even the 500# ones. Safer than sorry....

Mine cost +/- $75 total and was a simple build/plan. I'll post pics later tonight.

I would like to point out that, given the paint job on your ski, the brake lights will really not be adding much to its overall visibility
