ok well thanks to everyone that repled to my previous thread to get this unit running.
works a treat now

being xmas i just had to get what battery i could i ended up with a deep cycle 18amp/h agm sealed battery wasnt a dear one.

took it out yesterday but only got about a tank out of it before it started missing.

does any one else get better run times on these old analog systems?
should i save up for a higher amp/h battery?

my mate's other ideas were a seperate battery for the t/s
or using a stock coil, guessing it uses less power (do you realy need all the spark the msd coil spits out?)

cheers

Yeah total loss runs solely off the battery.... You should be getting a lot more than one tank out of your battery. I've done at least 2 tanks before on a 3 year old battery. You did say the engine was missing though...what do you have your spark plug gap at? My engine never misses with a low battery running 0.032" (I think), I'll just stop it and it won't have enough juice to fire it back up.

My guess is the new battery wasn't fully charged. I don't know what my battery is rated to in amp/hours but it's a normal 16lb battery and I doubt it's too much different.

Are you running a bilge pump?

You may also have a sketchy starter that is pulling high current and draining it prematurely.

Charge the battery, then take it to an automotive place and have them load test it to see if it holds up.

hi the battery was fully charged.
as for the starter u maybe onto something there as when it was getting low near the end it was doing a funny starter thing like it wasn't getting enough kick.
it would kick fast for a sec then hit a slow patch.
and yeah bilge pump was on for 1/2 the time.

No don't open up the plugs. I was just thinking you had opened the plugs up too far.

I run my bilge pump 100% of the time I'm on the water. Even if I plan to lay on the sand and rest for 30 minutes, I'll leave the bilge on so I don't forget.

The things you described about the starter are normal for a battery going dead. If the auto parts store load checks your battery and it's ok, you may want to buy replacement battery cables.

I can run my analog for 3 days on 1 charge. I run the bilge pump any time the engine is running. I use a jetworks battery. A worn out starter will drain a battery real fast! Ask me how I know. LOL

You could always try and crack open your starter and clean the contacts. Use some alcohol and steel wool to get the brushes and comm clean and if it's not too worn, it'll run like a champ again.

ohhh i hate getting starters back together ;)

i was just doing some more reading my coil is mounted right next to the brain are they ment to be seperated? or is that only the digital version?
the old instructions i've got dont say much.

You need to find the input voltage when it starts missing. Compare it to the battery terminal voltage, its possible that there is an excessive voltage drop through the wiring or switch. Which analog system do you have? CDI types dont draw much but the older kettering types like the KV were awfull.

bigo, if you have a harley davidson dealer ship in your town, go in there and get yourself a black screamin eagle 12 volt coil.

i had issue's with a jetnetics t/l i had on my sj, it come with a yellow coil, and it lasted 10 min's.
i put one of those black s/e coils on and was able to ride 3 tanks of gas out before the battery went dead.
no issue's with ign missing !!!

here it cost a little over $65usd.

good luck

yeah its a msd system, im running a blue msd pro coil atm.
i have a dyna coil/red msd coil and the stock coil spare i might swap one over see if it changes.

im thinking about just wiring the stock coil in there as i dont think you need the amount of spark the msd coil is throwing out.
