What should a person use as a measuring tool. Would using the thickness of a feeler gauge work?

Just eyeball it using the pointer tab arrows like the picture and be done with it or you can use that feeler gauge.
If you really want to measure it using a timing light; here are the specifications for the stock 68mm stroke crank in case you would like to mark your coupler or flywheel using a TDC dial indicator through the spark plug hole.
TDC = 0.0000
5-Degrees = 0.0045"
10-Degrees = 0.026"
15-Degrees = 0.059"
20-Degrees = 0.106"
25-Degrees = 0.164"
30-Degrees = 0.230"
35-Degrees = 0.306"
40-Degrees = 0.391"
Here's another picture of the 62T stator advanced around 2-degrees and remember rotating the stator CCW from the arrow is advancing it.

I think thats about where I put mine. I just got nervous when a few people told me it could be bad. I've decided screw it, I sometimes need to learn the hard way.
