To advance or not to advance?

So I have an 08 sj, no mods other than a lightened ZERO flywheel. I've been told both to advance 2 degrees and not to advance at all. So my question is this, when does a person want to advance an when should they just leave it alone. I'm no 2 cycle expert and do not have a good local tech so I rely on the advise I get here.

I have run my timing advanced for years. But last may I was running WOT for a bit to long, blew the top off the piston. Just put motor back together and just put the timing at the stock timing marks. Just decided I would rather ride than wrench.

You blew off the top of your piston!? You figure that was because your advanced timing? Were you running stock or msd ecu?

MSD Enhancer........

Blew off a huge chunk on the exhaust side. figured it built up alot of heat. Piston never stuck, just lost compression really quick!!!!!!!!

Never really got it running right after that, put a piston in it, had a gremlin, (this was in Late july or so) parked it. Just got it back in the water yest. gremlin was run off. Back up and running a year later. Smoked it sometime in mid April of last year.

Sounds like what we had last summer, cylinder got too hot and the ring grew enough to catch the exhaust port. Ours was compression related but similar results.

I ran my timing advanced for a few years now, in addition to a higher compression head, and MSD enhancer.

simple rules...
91 or better fuel ( I have ran 87, but never any WOT when im running that)
make sure your jetting is pretty close ( not lean)
make sure your cooling system is working well

I can run WOT for 60 seconds or so with 91 octane fuel, and it will gradually begin to loose some RPMS, I take this as it heating up and slowing down ( from friction) that has happened at least 2 times in the last few years that I can remember..

No damage engine is intact, and running very strong for what it is.

you might get lots of time on it advanced ( I certainly have)
or it might blow to tell the first time you run it WOT, its all a gamble, only you can decide if its worth the risk.

Is this where I measure the 2 millimeters? When I set mine I set it slightly less than what is shown in the picture.

never really thought about it, but basically, your plugs will fire later than they should, you will not get all the power out that would be available. With it advanced, you can get it to spark just a bit sooner, kinda like jumping the gun and getting a head start. You will burn more of the fuel. Downside if tow advanced, at WOT you may actually create to much burn causing your motor to run a bit hot. With the programable ignitions you can actually control the timing curve. This is where they become a very valuable tool in getting the mose out of your motor.

Yes, This is correct direction to advance.
Always remember...turn stator into the rotation of the crank to advance and with the rotation to retard. Crankshaft runs clockwise when looking at it from the front.
