300/440/550 thinking about putting 38 sbn carb on my 550 spare ski

ive got a 650 carb from my 650 superjet motor that i blew, that im looking to put on my 84 kawi motor. is the intake mani off the yamaha 650 wat i need also or is there a specific kawi intake mani to buy?

ok ill try this again. i have an 1984 kawasawki with a 550 in it. it appears to be all stock and was looking for a cheap upgrade. i blew my 650 case out last year and now have this carburator from it setting in the garage. ive heard that a 38 mukini carb from a yamaha 650 engine is a great upgrade for this 550 engine. so im wondering what i need for an intake and/or where to get it or does the yamaha carburator just bolt right in? umm im not really good at english, hopefully this makes since.:)

:)) Much clearer now.

As far as I remember the 550 manifold, the 38sbn should bolt right on it. If not you will need a spacer, that will cost 10 usd to fabricate. Yes, the performance will be much better with the sbn tan the old bn carb.

Yes the yamaha 650 comes with a 44 SBN carb and can go on a 550 but you need a spacer plate for the manifold. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Kawa...30449303206QQptZPersonalQ5fWatercraftQ5fParts The problem is I belive the 84 550's came with 38 BN carbs not the 44 BN like the 85 and up I could be wrong though. If this is the case you will have to get a manifold for a later 550 that has the whole big enough for a 44 or you will have to get your whole opened up. You can either have a machine shop do it or if your really carefull mark it real good with the 44mm gasket and open it up with your dremel. I have a 550 set up like this so I can get you some jetting specs in you need them. Mine has a pipe and is ported and everything but should be able to get your close. good luck

ok thanks jetski9010, im going to wait until it warms up a bit cus the water right now in nebraska is cold as S***. hah i will prolly port it myself, ive done a little porting and this dont sound like anything to difficult

Jetski9010 is correct you most likely have a sbn44, but maybe not. the best way to tell is the 44 has 4 bolts at the top and the 38s have three. the sbn 44 from a 650 sj is a great bolt on mod for 550s and i didn't have to make a jetting change, but like mentioned before only later 550s had the 44 intake manifold and you cannot make a 38 manifold work for a 44. you can also get the 44 intakes on ebay for cheap and then you'll need the spacer so the fuel pump on the sbn clears the head.

I good budget porting trick I have done with 550 piston ports is to cut some off the bottom of the cylinders to lower the port timing down a little and help out the bottom end power. This will also rise your compression without having to get the head cut too. Just check you squish clearance before you have some cut off and make sure you have a gap about .050 and then you can widen the exhaust port to about 66-67% just dont cut into the water jacket. Like I said this is not an all out port job but for a cheap mod to do in your garage its works out good.
