I'm not after carving at all. I wasn't when I bought the Freak and I am not now.
I had the Superfreak for two years and it really helped improve my flatwater riding. But I was ready for a change, to keep improving and not get stuck in a rut.
After trying a Bob and the Footrocket, I realized that the Freak was just a little bit too long for some newer tricks (consecutive flips, flat spins) with less than a 1200 or super talent.
Summing it up, the Footrocket handles a lot faster/shorter than a Freak without sacrificing stability. You can do everything handling related just by subtly shifting your weight (on the FR). That feeling is really unique - haven't felt it on any other hull I've tried. As example, I mentioned that the Bob handles short & fast, too. And it does....but not as effortlessly as the FR, which does it almost like a mind extension because the weight placement is just that subtle and almost sub-conscious.

Good description! Matt, Im just curious if you've ridden a Circus Freak yet? I know your comparisons to a Superfreak mostly relate to your -4.3 ... I havnt ridden a Circus or a Footrocket but I'm curious if your comparisons also include a Circus Freak as well as your -4.3 Freak, BOB hull, etc. Do you think the slightly forward weight transfer loosens the back of the ski so much because of the short hull with the addition of the huge built in tubbies that widen and stabilize the front end? I haven't seen a Footrocket in person but that was the part that stuck out to me the most when I saw it. I know most people wouldn't do this but I'm curious if you think the Footrocket is just a very unique hull design with a different weight balance or if a Freak with tubbies would have the same effect?

I didnt really notice the footrocker had that much rocker,it was in the water when i saw it though. One thing i really like about it was the way the foothold was cut into the hull,it let you get more forward and center your position on the ski without killing your back... All of the cali surf skis I checked out had longer pole length an were setup MUCH better overall. Its so irritating trying to demo a ski that is setup for both flat water and surf, they always have too short a pole to ride comfortably and balanced in the surf. That and most a/m hulls are moving the pole so far to the front that the steering cable and the throttle cable are not long enough to position the pole back far enough to be right for surf setups especially with the super short flatwater steering systems being used today. Stantons footrocket was setup perfect for the kinda balance point matt is talking about.

Not enough people have or even know about the longer steering cables needed to do this,I know thrust makes a steering cable, has anyone made a throttle cable long enough, the sn cable doesnt seem long enough for most these other a/m hulls listed

the footrocket was designed for flatwater, but crosses genres from the design and full width tail plate.
the very bottom/center of the hull is flat, the chines have a slight lift in the back, and the outside edge has visible curve along the whole ski.
the overall balanced feel is something i find unique, especially for so many different riders on such a small ski. (-8" with the long)
my rn steering cable is too long on the fr, no extended cables needed.

you want a ski that does it ALL very well then you really dont have many options, a ski with the tail plate (fr or lw) would def be the best choice

stanton...being a surf rider,as I see this is what you do with your ski for the most part,or maybe completely i dunno? Why did you choose a flatwater hull over the jb1?

when i decided to get a hull different than a SJ, i wanted it to be really worth the change. i wanted something as small as i could get away with so once i got used to the difference it would be worth the commitment. i figured with the adjustability of the fr and how nick could ride one in surf being so much bigger than me, i could make it rip, and worst case i could resell it. after riding a prototype full rocker superfreak i knew the design was legit, and took a chance on a next gen hull design for surfriding only, and i love it.

I have not tried a Circus. It was a tough call, but ultimately I went with a hull that I actually rode first and that put a huge grin on my face.
I considered a Circus, KDX, BOB, and XFS. The FR wasn't even in the line up for me.

Stanton..that makes sense too bro,I know your not cash flush right now either from what ive read,so props for being core to surf riding and breaking through with something on the cutting edge.and thanks for the demo of the fr also.

Matt..that is a perfect example of why its so worth while to demo a hull before you buy, talk is talk usually nothing more than talk, but experience is the key factor,Nick should be stoked he got one to stanton and he is getting people on it to feel how sweet it really is. Im sure he is developing more sales here because of it.

For what it's worth, I demo'd Nick's Cold Fusion FR, not Stanton's (though he did offer that I could ride it).
In fact, both Nick and Stanton did what they could to get all sorts of riders to try those two skis.

sounds like hes doing it up right, getting guys to ride and experience the feel of a hull creates the kind of confidence and excitement in it to get them to pull the trigger.
