SXR With No Mid Range Throttle

I bought an SXR over the winter with a factory pipe, novi carbs, reeds and a fresh top end. The ski is crazy quick BUT its fine at low speed putting around until you try to go a little faster. It goes from slow putting around to hammering quick and taking off. There is no mid range at all. I do have a second ski with a factory pipe and a few things done, that does not have this issue.

Is it the pipe settings or the carbs? I don't want to mess with this and make it worse, but don't know of a local shop that can tune it for me.

not really following. You said it goes from idle to Wide open really quick........ Sounds like it just comes on strong and pulls all the way to top end.

If it has a dry pipe, what you are describing is likely totally normal. Even some wet pipes come on strong like that if they are set up right.

Assuming there are no problems with the pipe or carbs and the engine/pump setup is healthy, the dry pipe is not quite the best for basic rideability for the average rec rider. They are more like an all or nothing pipe. A stock exhaust dried out a little with a groupk mod (or similar) sounds like it might work a little better.

Thanks, it is a wet pipe, but does exactly as your described. Maybe it’s just too much of a build for our riding. May need to replace that ski with something closet to stock.

Try adjusting the adjustment screws on the head pipe. Close the bottom and open the middle some. Play with them, You can tune the power with the pipe adjustment screws..

I found running my Wet Pipe cold, was the best. Running it on the edge of boiling water, all the power was at the top end. I can't remember my exact settings, but I think I have the mid open 1/4-1/2 turn and the bottom open a good 1/2-3/4 turn.

It's 95 air and 85 water here, and I still don't boil water after ripping buoys. I also went from a tall prop (15/23) down to a 13/19 to move the power band. I'm now on the pipe before the buoy, instead of right at the apex.

Your ski might also be ported for racing, not rec riding.
