sxr intake sensor - can i do this

This 05 sxr has a group k big bore sleeper and is still running the stock modified pipe.

Can I do this ? ,

Instead of jumping the wires from the intake air temp. sensor to advance the ignition 6 degrees, do you think I could run a switch from the handlepole to the intake temp. sensor wires and get the same advance. Electricity takes the easiest path of resistance and would run through the handlepole switch before it encountered the intake temp. sensor.(I am assuming the sensor is a resistor that can measure heat) When the switch is open the current would have no where to go except through the temp sensor and operate as designed. When the switch is closed the current would run through the switch because it has less resistance.(increased timing 4-6 degrees) That way I could turn the advance off or on as needed. I could also run pump gas vs. race gas if I wanted.

Am i way off ?

Thanks in advance

The advance is not enough to force you to run race gas...... Just do the jumper, you are not going to be turning it on and off.............

you could put a switch up on the pole, it would work, just no real need. That mod is a small mod than when added with other small mods it adds up to your total package, it is not something that you would really even barely notice.

I just did the jumper mod and bought a Wetwolf cone that I am installing this weekend. Sweet and simple. Should give a little more punch off the line.

Are you sure you should be saying that?
Harry at Group K does not like advancing the timing. The motor is ported and set up to not run the advance timing. It may need race gas. I'm not sure.
I would contact Harry and see what he says.

you do make a good point......... But, if I am not mistaken the Sleeper Kits are all set up to run regular gas........ The Hammer Kits are the race gas versions......... I was basing my points along those lines........ With Group K's kits being on the conservative side I would think that the minimal amount of advance you get but using the jumper ( 4 degrees if lucky, I have read/heard that it can very +/- a few degrees). But, a phone call is cheap insurance.

Yes,
Harry did say to run race gas if I run FP's Wet Pipe. Assuming because of the jumper. Thats why I would like to able to turn the advance on/off if Im not running race gas. I might race only 2-3 times per season.

why not just use the supplied jumper that comes with the pipe. (you can order one seperately........ insert the jumper if you run the pipe, if you remove the pipe then hook the sensor back up..............

I just like the idea of being able to advance the timing when needed. The last ski I owned was a wrench fest. Dont want to have the same issues. Thats why I had Harry build this one.

I would assume-and I am hoping someone will know- that if you run a stock motor the advance will not necessitate anything higher that 93 octane... I have no motor mods, have the jump and a Wetwolf cone, and I wanted some bottom end punch-so I hope the gas I'm running is OK...

You'll be fine with 93.

Jetaddict,
my motor was ported by group k. The combination of timing, compression and porting on my ski might require different
octane than yours.

Thanks everyone for your input. I called Harry again.
