SXR SXR Factory Wet Pipe Plumbing

So I installed a FP wetpipe late last season according to the instructions and went out for a ride.
Changed fitting on pump and rejetted carbs

Original Plumbing
  • Water In Tube => Exhaust Manifold
  • Rear Cyl. Out => Water Outboard & T-Fitting => Stinger
  • Front Cyl. Out => Headpipe Bottom
  • Headpipe Top => Water Out Rear Tube
To my surprise the pipe didn't increase any power and ran super hot. I had ALL the screws open over 1 turn to bring it to sizzle. It just wasn't adjustable at all !!!


First ride of this season I rode with some friends and a mechanic that own 750's and they advised me to redo the plumbing to this:

Revised Plumbing
  • Front Cyl. Out => Headpipe Top
  • Headpipe Bottom => Water Out Rear Tube
All ran great with tons of power. I was able to adjust the pipe the way it said in the instructions. I thought that I read the instruction wrong and never looked back.

Now I read on this forum that riders are using the original plumbing with sucess. So I plumb it back to original and it ran great.

I put it back to my friends revised plumbing advice seeing that there was no difference in power or heat and the set-up was way more sano. I figured it must have been a clog that cleared once I reversed the water flow.

Is there a reason why I can't run my revised plumbing set-up? Is there something that I don't see?

There will be no issue with the revised plumbing. Some state that if you feed the water to the top of the head pipe, you will not be able to bleed all the air out of the head pipe correctly and the water will not inject fully into the exhaust. While feeding from the bottom, the air will escape through the injection holes and the top fitting therefor the whole water jacket of the head pipe will be filled. Another idea is that you want to inject the coolest water to the fitting that you are tuning the pipe with. If you are going for bottom end and you are opening up the top screw, you want to feed the water to the top of the manifold so that the coldest water gets injected. For top RPM feed water to the bottom fitting and open the bottom screw. I have ran both ways and have not noticed any real differences.
