SXR Dry Pipe Coupler Replacement

Just picked up another SXR and this one is a running a dry pipe. Read the few articles on here about changing over to a NAPA 644 hose which I ordered. My question. What is the easiet way to replace this hose and install so that I hopefully will get more than a couple rides before it falls off again. Downloaded the install off of factory websites page and they are talking about removing the bed plate bolts and sliding the motor, is this standard practice?

yes to get the pipe off you need to slide the motor forward. what hose are you talking about? the sleeve on the mani to pipe is just a cover. I did order a long sleeve for the other end and it now has no room to slide off anymore.

I have an sx-r with a factory dry pipe and I do not touch my bed bolt's. I notched into the fiberglass about an inch wide by half inch deep and my pipe come's off easy. As far as the rubber seal from the manifold to the exhaust pipe. I went to home depot in the plumbing section and bought 4" stainless steal and rubber coupling and sliced it length way's. I then bought heavy duty hose clamps for a sail boat shop. Look's very clean and I stopped any oil from leaking into my engine compartment. I'll try to upload some picture's.

if your exhaust is leaking you have bad orings. by not replacing them the pipe and mani may be rubbing together.

You do not need to move your motor forward at all to get the pipe off, just notch your hull where the hood seal is, directly behind the pipe. I do not even use the "coupler" or anything at all. It is just a cover and helps keep exhaust sludge from leaking. It serves no useful purpose. If my exhaust starts to leak I just replace the O rings. The O-Rings are super super cheap anyway, so I do not have a problem replacing them.

Try and find a local seal place, if you have one. You can find those O-Rings for less than a dollar each. Take the old ones with you. They are made of Viton.

THE orings are made of buna. viton should work too. but buna is cheap. find a fastenal in your town and tell them the #s that the orings are.they are standard trade #S. either way have some new ones on hand and make sure your pipe is mounted up square. dry pipes mounted correctly have great reliability and performance. wet pipes are fine too but a dry pipe jetted correctly will blow doors on a wet pipe ski. just my .02

I have just stripped mine down during a rebuild and it's so right that the pipe needs to be square! I took the engine out and sat it flat on the bench, stripped pipe and manifold off and changed all the gaskets, fitted new orings in the pipe and offered it back up. You know whe the orings are new - it literally took two of us to get back on and there was a firm clunk when the orings located in the grooves. Then fitted a new silicone couple to cover the join and stop crap getting in their and that was also a tight fit - now it's all done though it's like new!!!!

Looking forward to getting ski back together now!
