We're trying to decide where to go for vacation this year. It's either gonna be around Destin/Panama City, FL or Myrtle Beach, S.C.. I'm planning to take the SJ and get in some surf. Any places you guys would recommend going to? This will be my first time in surf. :arms: :Banane01:

Having lived in Mobile, AL, riding mostly at Orange Beach, AL - Fort Walton Beach, FL, the gulf is always hit or miss... depends on whether there is a tropical depression, storm or hurricane brewing.

East coast would probably be a little more predictable.

it would be luck for you to get surf at panama city when you get there. It's just not consistant enough. Anything on the Atlantic would be a better bet but the summer is generally not a good time for surf

Hit up Sebastian Inlet! There is a break out about 300yds off the beach. It is a sandbar "monster hole" just dont ask how it got its name. It breaks with 1-2ft surf at lowtide. Anything bigger and it goes off all day! Just watch for the re-re's on their couches.

Florida is not the place to be for surf in the summer, unless there's a Depression/Tropical Storm/Hurricane... then it's only hit and miss... the conditions are never good for longer than a few hrs. Florida is very very unpredictable... ya just got to comitt to a spot and hope for the best... Overall, the best spot I see for summer suref would be an Inlet on the east coast of Fl... there are plenty to choos from...

Is Sebasion Inlet close to P.C. or Destin? We were in Destin last year, and it was like a lake. I took my kayak, and caught some surf a couple days. Scuba diving was nice since the water was so clear. What places would you recommend on the east coast? I don't need monster surf anyway. I'm used to 4 foot rollers coming off cruisers at the lake.

7hrs. minimum... and anywhere on the east coast is better for surf as long as you don't go below Sebastian Inlet.. It all gets even more scetchy down there... Bahamas block most of the fetch to that area...

Sebastian Is about 45miles south of Cocoa Beach, Im sure that you will get a couple days of fun little surf. Just dont expect it to be spectacular. If you do come let me know! You would probaby want to Stay in Melbourne beach, its like 20miles from the Sebastian inlet, theres not much for lodging real close to the inlet. Orlando is only like an hour away so you could hit up a theme park while your here.

Sebastian inlet is probably the best surf in the FL.

I'll check out Cocoa and Melbourne beach. I'm still looking at places in S.C. too. We just need a decent place to stay, nice beach, and a dive shop somewhere close. If I come down there I'll let you know. I'm sure a few of you would get a good laugh out of a surf newbie.

On the other side of the coin, your other destination (the NC/SC coast in that area) usually has decent surf. It's no west coast 10 footers, but there's only a few rare days when the you can't find some well-rideable surf in that area. I vacation about 45 minutes north of Myrtle a couple times a year and I've ALWAYS had at least 2 -3 footers on even the calmest days.

I haven't ridden in SC, but I think it's 100 feet in NC. Either way, I've ridden plenty of times in the Holden Beach Inlet between Holden and Long Beach in NC. The surf on the Long Beach side is perfect. The Coast Guard dudes have ridden right by me on many occasions and have never made any indication of noticing me other than a wave. As long as you stay away from the swimmers (which is pretty easy in that area), you're fine.

Then again, this is not a busy beach like Myrtle Beach.

LOL---you're so full of it, Charlie.

Surf here will be non existant unless, as Yamaslut pointed out, there's a storm. But you're welcome to come to PC, anyway.

IF you were going to the Gulf, I would look into Orange Beach, access to the surf (when it is there) is really easy.......... it is a smaller beach community, not so much a party town like Destin/Ft Walton, but not as busy............ but plenty to do and see.............. But, if you want surf.......... East Coast.

Thanks for all the advice. I think we're leaning toward S.C. since it's a little closer to us. I have a 2 year old that will be going, so I'll be doing the drivin at night while he's sleeping. I don't care if I have to drive an hour after I get there to find a good spot.

If you can make it down to Savannah, we maybe can hit some ankle slappers here.
