Superjet starting problems

Hey All,

So last time I rode it (a few months ago) it started and ran fine. When I finished my ride I put it back on the trailer and went to fire it up to clear out the water....only clicks from the electrical box....nothing from the starter motor.

At the time I thought it was just a dead battery so I didn't investigate any further.

Well I put in a fresh battery yesterday and it tried to turn over once and then just clicks again from the electrical box.

I haven't had much time to investigate yet, so I thought I'd post this and get some other opinions/ideas before I do.

THINGS I NOTICED:
1) If I leave it for a few hours and try again it does try and kick over then starter stops. After that....just clicks from the electrical box

2) I opened the fuse access cap on the electrical box and there was moisture in there. The fuse itself was boane dry....but water ain't good!

3) plugs out...driveshaft spins....so it ain't seized

THINGS I THINK IT MIGHT BE:
1) dead or almost dead starter (that will suck to replace)...will try and bang it with a hammer in case there is a dead spot

2) dead solenoid (starter relay).....will test by briding with a screwdriver

I should also mention it has an MSD ignition enhancer....and I've heard they can go .

So...any ideas? anything to add?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

the switches commonly get dirty.

unplug the red and brown wires near the carb side of the E-box.

stick needle nose pliars down in the one going to teh E box, should engage starter circuit.

stick Ohm meter on leads going to handlepole, check with start button depressed, dissasemble switch and clean contacts in switch, and in connectors if you get much resistance at all when checking switch closed.

also clean the batter cables where they mount.

quick easy test for the black one, run a car jumper cable from the battery black to to a clean bolt on the engine, and if it starts like that, then your boats battery black cable is bad.

Which hole? If I unplug red and brown...which one do I stick the pliars down? ;-)

Switch seems just fine (i.e. obviously getting power to the electrical box)....but I'll test after checking all other connections

nice and clean ;-)

Thanks for that....love those "quick test" tips ;-)

the short red/brown coming from the e box, short the red and brown together.

the red is voltage FROM the battery, when you close the start swtich the brown takes to the small side of the relay.

some times it wont pass the full 12.6 volts, even thought the switch feels fine.

the corrosion inside, wont pass the full battery voltage, sometimes as low as 11 volts or so.

Excellent....thanks for the clarification Mouth....makes much more sense now ;-)

Now if this day will end so I can go home and tinker!!
