I'm fabricating one right now based off of madness maker's design(below).
image.jpg image.jpg

This is for an xmetal pole. I bought a set of new x metal a pinch bolts, some 1/2 inch x 1 inch wide thick stainless bar from McMaster Carr to make the "saddles" in which the pseudo pole bolt sits. 1/2 inch OD stainless steel D profile rod(so that the set screws sit flush). I also bought standard 1/2 inch SS rod. I wanted to try both. Delrin plastic spacer ID 1/2 I forget the OD and a watcon pole spring. Hopefully I can get this together this weekend. I will post pics as progress is made

very nice set up and you can change the spring with out having to remove pole brackets

To be clear here, the pictures are of madnessmaker's set up. I have yet to receive all of my materials necessary to begin fabrication.

I will put together my prototype, provide pictures and a review of function. Once I have everything figured out, you guys can consider if you would like for me to make some extras.

Quick Price breakdown:
Watcon RN pole spring 36$
Xscream pinch bolts 60$
Raw SS probably 15$ or so
Delrin bushing 10$
SS set Bolts 1.5 $
Fuel line cushion .50
Time for welding, fabricating - undetermined.

oops, forget the xmetat pole bracket, i was thinking the chan. still use the 650sx spring and the sj thru bolt instead of the xmetal individuals. where the spring will ride on the carbon, i put a small square of aluminum for support.

I've been told that Jloria said the 650sx spring was not up to his expectations on his freak. Did it provide adequate lift for you ?
The issue in this thread is to find options on how to run a spring with pinch bolts to avoid having to take the SF pole brackets off when the spring breaks. There's a lot of labor involved taking off those brackets and then getting them back on working against the spring. Anymore ideas out there ? Probably not, and I talked with Carl @ cold fusion about this the other day too for options because he experimented with pinch bolts with springs.

i guess it all boils down to wether you are worth a crap as a mechanic or not. that simple task was nothing for me but i guess it could be a problem for some that cant even run a screwdriver. i tried several springs, some were too stiff and some were too weak. the 650sx was perfect. the pole weighed nothing in your hands but didnt turn the chin pad into a catapult. i used a used spring and beat my freak for a lot of hours and the spring never broke. another problem for some might be the fact that the spring needs to be slightly modified / cut / bent. and that pinch bolt spring contraption looks more complicated that just taking the freak crown setup off.the SJ spring is too stiff for the xmetal pole. anything can be made to work. on other skis, i have torched the spring to remove tension, just like lowering a coil spring car.

the 650sx bolt only works with standard stainless steel pole crowns xmetal/raddudes and the like. it dont work on any billet/thick/stock crowns, its too short. all bolts are 14mm dia , and some cheap AM bushings are drilled 9/16, so they got slop right off the bat.

This is what i did...very easy and works very well

xmetal pole, standard freak brackets.

used a RN pole bolt
Used a Blowsion RN pole spring
Drilled small hole in pole base to locate the small arm of the spring (same setup as for stock RN pole)
used a cheap gas torch to heat the long arm of the spring and bent it so it would sit against the base of the upper hull beneath the pole, no tension on it when the pole is vertical....easy to push in the bolt......= perfect tension for a weightless pole.

another option thanks for sharing i would like not to have to take pole bracket out to change spring so far kohl set up is looking like what iam going to do

IMG_00002519.jpg the oem 650sx spring works well just a little light depending on pole length etc. on kims freak we used a oem 650sx spring and i fabbd a block to give it slightly more tension. perfect now.
i have tried stock 750sx/800 sxr spring and they way to strong, a aftermarket spring for a 650sx may be a good drop in setup, but i havent tried one.

my custom spring setup on the x metal pinch bolts works well, but a pain to setup, and it required a adel clamp that was through bolted to hull to prevent spring from twisting and snapping out of place where it contacts hull side. (happend after a few rides, and not shown in those pics i posted.

it is more of a pain to install the pole with the brackets/bolt/spring as one unit. but not really that bad.

a small relief on one side of the sf hulls to clear a long pole bolt would be cool.

yeah i can see where the pinch bolt set up can be a pain the pic that kohl post shows easy access to the spring but no breather tubes iam sure with the breather tubes that will be pain as well

IMG_0598.JPG IMG_0597.JPG IMG_0596.JPG so after thinking about it a bit i decided to go this route only took a couple hours drilled a hole in the pole and one in the hull and a blowsion spring
thanks for all the ideas and pics
