super jet coil issues?

'91 super jet has intermittent loss of spark at one of my plugs... I put new plugs in to no avail. I am thinking the coil is being funny, or at least the wire connection to the coil? Is this a common issue? How do I fix? is there any way to test to make sure that coil is good (resistance, ohm's, etc)??

If it's to only one plug, your coil is bad. Or, more likely, the wires.
Yamaha did a very crappy job with attaching the spark plug terminals to the wire ends. It's just a spiral poked through the insulation.
Carefully take off the boots, see how the terminal is attached.
Then remove it, cut the wire back an inch or so (you don't want corroded wire), then reattach terminal and boot.
Getting aftermarket MSD terminals and boots is also a good idea.

Sometimes.
The wire ends corrode, and you don't have a good connection from wire to terminal.
I think that's the most common failure mode.

still not totally understanding, I guess I didn't look at mine close enough. You are saying there is regular wire coming out of the coil and then the insulated plug wire connects to it? That connection is the problem? Anyone have pics or link to any other threads about this?

Mine are all taped up with electrical tape (bought it used and it has run fine for quite a while...) Maybe thats the reason for the tape? What do I do, fix or replace? What do I replace it with? how much does it cost?

Take the tape off.
Then take boots and terminalls off.

The bad connection where the end of the plug wire connects to the terminal.
I am not sure how to make this any clearer.

i had similaral problem but went ahead and replace the coil pack, I cut my old leads open from end to end for grins and they were corroded and broke in several places,

yeah, I should have just taken it apart in the first place. It is pretty self explanatory. What I did for now was took an old set of marine plugs & wires I had around and robbed the boot and terminal from there. I cut a couple inches off the stock wire and attached these in place. So far so good, but the whole wire seemed a bit brittle, so we'll see how it holds up.

Some guys on another forum suggested replacing that coil with a polaris one, then you can put new wires on without having to buy a new coil all the time. Here is a link to the coil if anyone is interested:

Still having trouble with my ski! I put fresh terminal ends on (in place of my makeshift job with the used marine plugs I had laying around) I am not sure what to try next.

Before I put the plug wires back on I just held the stripped wire to the plugs and had a buddy crank my ski for me, there is good strong spark on both wires. So i am led to believe it is something else...

The ski seems to run fine on the trailer (kinda hard to tell of course) so when I get it in the water it continues to feel like its only running on one cylinder, (I have tried removing one plug wire at a time) and then all of a sudden at about half throttle it acts okay, but not all of the time. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Is there anyway/anything at all I can do to test that coil ? What about checking resistance? Also, is it possible a voltage increase comes with the higher rpms of the engine so then the coil is okay at higher rpms but not good enough on the lower end of things?

Please help.

its sounds as if your pilot fuel circuit in the carb might be clogged.

\remove the carb, and clean the little filter, and blow some carb cleaner thru all the ports and jets, and reinstall it.

this really takes about 10 minutes and will not require anything other than a 12mm wrench, and a flathead screwdriver, and some carb cleaner.

the diaphragm in the float mechanism seemed a bit goofy, I have seen these in outboard engines where they were just slightly distorted/wouldn't lay flat and that was enough to make it not run right... Is that a possibility? Time for a carb rebuild? How much does a rebuild kit cost?

What little filter are you talking about? I have a 44mm mikuni.....

D-Roc

I forgot!
there is a little bowl like internal fuel filter inside of the carb. use needle nose pliers to pull it out. i have seen some stuff living in there making the ski run like crap.

cleaned carb, no go.

Took carb and intake off tonight, discovered one of my reeds is bent/messed up and facing the wrong way. Now, do I start a new discussion or can someone point me somewhere as to how to change these out?

What should I put back in there for reeds? Stock or aftermarket something?

I didn't even bother to examine how these come apart, noticed that one was screwed up and then had to leave.... so go easy on me.

those reeds pedals should have little screws that can be kinda pita to get out but kinda ment that way so they dont fall into a motor, I use a small set of channel locks to get them out especially is they have been loctighted in there, I dunno about the carb what size it is. They have some aftermarket ones on ebay for the 650 almost all the time.

yes pull two bolts that hold carb on so you can have easy access to the bolts that hold your intake manifold on. Confused, If you have discovered a broken reed dont you already have the manifold off?

manifold is off, i was wondering how to get the reeds out... still have not gone out in the garage and looked, boy im lazy. thought someone would have a quick answer on how to get them out of there (my friend originally took it apart for me while I was not home, curiosity got the best of him)

How bout recommendations on what to put back in there? Do i go stock or get some after market somethings?
