Sunken Ski

So a buddy of mine let some girls ride his 90 SN last labor day, ended up sinking the ski.. We got it to the shore and emptied out all of the water that we could. We could get it to turn over but it wouldn't stay on.. Continued to turn it over until the battery had died, hopefully leaving no water in it. He put it in the garage and forgot about it.. Well it's now my ski.. Haven't tried starting it yet because I'm waiting on a new exhaust but what should I be looking for.. Do you think it'd be safe to replace anything right away? Thanks for any help.

Assuming that you did not get it running as you stated, the crank is most likely rusted solid. You will need a crank and probably new pistons, rings, wrist pin bearings, and a bore.
The electronics (starter, stator) might also be bad. The bendix gear might be damaged.

After sinking a motor like that, you MUST get it running soon (hours, not days) and run it hard for a while (half hour or so) to get all the water out. Cranking it until the battery dies does not remove water sufficiently.
Sinking the ski may have introduced water into the tank. When you tried starting it, the fuel pickups would have tried sucking up the water first. This may be the reason why you did not get it running.

I would say its F'd....I dont think I have ever seen a " sank and worry about it later" ski run...at least not for long...like said. its probably rusted by now.
