Stupid SXR turfing questions

I am embarking on my first ever HT experience this weekend and have a few questions as this relates to the SXR:
1) How the heck do I get the rear rail and side rails off? Those things look like rivets driven into the hull....do they just pop out, or is there a tool I have to use to remove them?
2) I have read some threads in here that I should sand the tray for prep, sand the back of the turf, clean it with acetone, and precut the pieces. I have no footwells, so can I possibly do a seamless install? I was considering turfing all the way up the sides of the tray and leaving off the caps. Any advice/pictures?
3) I am also going to be putting in Dakines later- should I just wait until I get them, or is it possible to slice the areas and do minimal damage to the turf if I plan to do the install later? I think I saw a thread here where someone did it after the fact, and it looked pretty good. I plan on doing the acorn nut/washer/epoxy route for the mount points....any other advice pertaining to that?

This should be interesting. :fing02:

depends on how long youre going to wait for the straps. ex: if youre putting them on in 2 weeks, i would wait, but for a longer period of time, cutting up a little turf for the install is no big deal.

Cant really help you on the other Q's bro, sorry.

good luck!

the rail caps are riveted you have to drill them out and their a huge bitch..... the rail caps are real expensive too so if you save them you can resell them but they break easy......turfing an sxr is a pain especially if you turf where the rail caps were,,, good luck

OK....the rail caps stay- turf is going up to them, not over. I just got my straps today (mail just brought them!), so I am actually gonna wait to turf until I get my surf stance marked off and determine where I want the straps to go. I am putting them both in the rear, since I primarily stand that way during surf riding- all those years riding the Blaster got me into a habit- so I am going to turf this bad boy during the week. I have all the stuff except the acorn nuts and washers- going to the hardware store to get them Monday, and have my buddy weld them up for me.
Any particular method strapped in guys use to anchor them to the tray? I am planning on using some marine epoxy and then glassing a thin layer over them.

the stock rails are heavy! it's easy to turf over the sxr. You have to drill the rivets out. out thin strips of turf and glue them into the crevises. Again ditch the stock rails.

you aren't going to intal footholds? I've got an extra set for cheap. PM me if you want them. Also, if you are scared to install them Tom21 runs a ski shop. he'll let you install them there with his supplies and advice for a little $$ or for a few bucks more he'll install them for you.

Actually, I'll install the footholds if you let me borrow your hood for an evening. :sneaky:

Thanks for the offer Tim...lol...that's good to know about Tom21. I actually rode my friend's ski with footholds and seriously did not care for them. I know there are many styles out there, but I am really comfortable with straps instead. For some reason I just don't feel locked in enough in holds- it may be because I am a noob to riding standups or whatever. I might look into that later, but I really am not too sold on them.

dont re-install the stock rail caps they will rip off on one big bail.. use a 3/16 drill bi to remove them.. then use some butcher paper to mock up the shape of the mats to fit the sections.. there is a good thread about installing a set of straps post turf.. use a heat gun and lots of contact cement
check this out for wammers way to install: its for a SJ but it shows the steps pretty well

I vote for foot holds as well but its your choice..

Thanks for that link- pretty sweet job.
I know everyone is using footwells. I guess I just like to be different.

25mm that would be nice and comfy.. who sells? enough clearance in the footwells or do you leave it out of there?

call hydro-turf, they have the 25mm under pad. just tell them how much you want. i shaved mine down going into the foot holds from 25mm down to 8mm - a gradual slope. Makes for a nice comfy hold.
