Stripped threads?

I've used this stuff called 'thread restore' on a harmonic balancer and it worked great. It's kind of like JB weld, put some in the hole, cover the bolt that goes in with a release agent, thread it in and wait for it to harden, then remove the bolt

Heilicoils work very well, But are very hard to install correctly, and this is why they don't work as well, due to the installer... NOT the heilicoil! Heilicoils for the first strip out, then I use timesert after heilicoil is stripped out.

Anyone care to give a detailed lesson on installing a helicoil? I decided to try those first, but no instructions with the kit. You mention the installer is usually the problem and I hate to start this thing incorrectly.

Just put in 2 heli-coils in my Blaster in the exhaust side - worked like a charm and torqued up no problem...Just make sure your hole is drilled straight...take your time with tapping the hole and use some WD-40 to make things just a lil easier

I found some instructions online that said to use a tap to clean the hole. Do I use a 8mm tap for an 8mm helicoil? Seems like that wouldn't fit. Or do I need to use a drill bit or both? If I use a drill bit, does anyone know what size I should use with the 8mm helicoil?

Thanks in advance for any input you have.

Dang!

I misread the title and though this was the stripper thread :purr:

Bummer . . . .

Helicoil worked on a spark plug that blew out of a cylinder head on a 650 Merc outboard.
It held for 8 years and still going strong when I sold it!

I may start that thread when I can find the solution to this one.:haha:

Can anyone help with this? I have no clue where to begin installing these.

No, you don't use the same size tap as the helicoil. The helicoil size that is listed on the package is the inner diamter thread size, not the outer diameter size of the helicoil itself. Any helicoil kit you get should come with the tap for the helicoils, you just have to supply the drill bit. A helicoil tap is set up a tad bit different from a regular tap. Go down to NAPA or whatever is around you and they should be able to help you out - be sure to take the bolt that you are using and see if they have anything that matches up.

Basically you drill out your existing hole, tap hole with the supplied tap, and then install the helicoil with the little install tool.
