strip paint off motor

Is sandblasting the best way to get the paint off a motor? I am not sure if I am going to powder coat or paint it yet.

Aircraft stripper will work thought.

If you are going to powdercoat it you will have to strip it down and pull the crank out anyways.

The motor is all torn down so that's not an issue.

powder coating sucks in salt water... don't do it!!!!!

If the part wasn't prepped and coated properly, salt water will get under the coat, cause corrosion, and unseat the powdercoating, making it pop/flake off.


Basically the same thing that will happen to paint.

I would say get it beadblasted, and if you maintain it right...rinse, wd-40 after every ride etc....I would just leave it raw, I did that with my old ski and never had an issue

If you are going to paint, get paint from a boating store (lower unit paint worked really well for me) and make sure you use an etching primer before hand (also at boating stores)

Like he said, I have seen paint flake off like that from corrosion.

If i were to paint the engine i would use VHT (http://www.vhtpaint.com/) or rustoleum, I have never had good luck with Krylon lasting.

every Xmetal pole I have seen that was powder coated has corroded horribly.. Paint will not lift like that crap does... I hate Powder coating!!!

This is one reason Xmetal does not powder coat their poles anymore...

What does powder coating provide that a simple paint job wont?? IMO nothing. I know it's harder, but who cares if it fall off in 2 years...

not from my experience... once a powder coated item is nicked or cut, the saltwater will get under the powder coating and keep lifting it... This doesn't happen w/ paint unless the paint is not prepped correctly...

I agree. Unless your looking for color I love the raw bead blasted look.

agree. I dont do anything to my bead blasted cylinder on my bike so it shouldnt be that hard on a jetski.

Blast the parts down to bare aluminum and use an Iridite 14-2 or Alodine 1200S conversion coating before applying a zinc chromate or phosphate primmer.

Powder coatings and paints will both lift at the machined surfaces edges if some type of corrosion resistant coating or primmer is not used.
