Stinger on a factory pipe

Been wondering this for a while... What's the stinger actually for? Is it primarily supposed to cool the waterbox and dampen the sound or is there a performance advantage to it?

Wasn't aware the entire area at the end of the chamber was considered the stinger but yes I was referring to the water spigot. Just want to be clear on its purpose because the SJ factory pipe has it incorporated into the chamber while the kawi 750 pipe has it in a separate tube between the chamber and waterbox.

Usually on close ended chambers, the water spigot is after the stinger, such as the 750 pipe and the blaster mod chamber. It is on the tail of the stinger in open ended chambers, such as the SJ one and others.


Its to cool, quiet, and modify the speed of the exhaust gas. The Xscream mod takes this and adds it so it doesnt get injected till after the chamber, and into the tubing.... so there it really only cools, and dampens... while not really effecting the speed of the gas.

Cool thanks. So if the stinger was plugged or deleted on a SJ chamber, it may require some tuning adjustment on the pipe? I've got a metal waterbox and just brainstorming a little is all.

dont plug or delete it. This could cause the pipe to run to hot if your not careful. Just take a old seat (from a carb needle and seat), and drill it out to like 1/8" and plug it in your water line. At least this way you can fine tune what you have.


I am running a popoff set to like 10 psi or something like that, so I dont get any water out of the head pipe until perhaps 3000rpms, and then a restrictor after that.

Yea, I guess you could pay crazy prices for something simple that you can make out of old parts and a trip to the brass fitting section at ACE hardware....

Here is one for you... There are two different style blaster limited chambers floating around out there. The 'old style' had no stinger fitting and it was instead located on the 'u-pipe' that connects the chamber to the water box. If you search, I've got a for sale ad with pics of both the old chamber and this pipe in it. The 'new style' limited chamber has a stinger fitting located at very beginning of the stinger pipe (this is the short straight pipe off the end of the converging cone) similar to a sj chamber. I have been told by a very respected source that the 'new style' chamber is worth a solid 3 hp over the 'old style' due to this change.

So put that in your pipe and brap it! lol
 
The stinger on a two stroke expansion chamber is the straight pipe after the inversion cone.

Its purpose is a bleed for the gasses. The smaller the stinger, the higher the pressure will be in the pipe. This will lead to a stronger reversion pulse.

In addition to the need for cooling the waterbox, the water sprayed in essentially makes the size of the stinger smaller, slowing down the gasses escaping and making the reversion pulse stronger.

In this sense our pipes have many more variables than a two stroke that has a completely dry pipe. Look at the jetworks flow control valve (leaving the effect of filling the waterbox aside.) At low rpm there is little to no flow in on the stinger water inlet. This will make the stinger appear its full size, and the reversion pulse is slow and not very strong (which is good for low rpms). At higher engine rpms there is much more flow through the valve, this makes stinger act as if it is smaller, therefore the pulse is stronger and faster (good for high rpms).
