SX/SXi/SXi Pro still life in a 14 year old ski? trying to improve performance (99 750 pro)

sounds to me like ignition, possibly coil or wires. Also, I had a issue like this related to fuel tank pressure. The harder I rode and splashed around the fuel the richer it would run and flood itself out. I removed the valve in the fuel tank vent line at the tank. could also be stuck needle/seat in the carb. It might actually not be running out of fuel, when you have to give it 1/8 throttle to start it your also giving it more air by opening the throttle plates.
On a side note, when my ski is hot I usually have to restart it at WOT or use the primer, thats pretty normal. My ski has never started very easy without some throttle input when cold or hot since I started modding.

thanks, sxipro02, the electrical problem was resolved. just used my dremmel to polish the crap out of all the battery connections.

this fuel issue is really bothering me though.. it sucks having to stop just because the ski cant run right. tell me more about this valve in the fuel tank. did you completely remove the valve? or just clean it? what is the valves function? i assume its just a one way valve to let gasses out and no water in. any actual harm in taking this valve out?

I couldnt find any good solid info on how it functioned but on my it would only let air in so it was causing too much pressure in the tank. I took mine out to see if it helped and havent had any issues with it. Been out since last season. The vent line runs up the had pole so its not likely youll have any issues with water getting in. Id try that. The valve in mine was in the nipple on the tank and just pulled right out. I took out the whole thing. Needle, seat, spring. The issue with my leaking needle seat was found by watching the carbs with the filters off, when I shut off the engine fuel would dribble out and go into the motor causing very hard starts and when riding it would hesitate very bad if I backed off the throttle and then tried to hit it again.
Make sure your plug wires are in good shape, did you cut them back yet? this is very common on kawis.

Cut them back? i've read alot of threads/articles/forums on the ski's but never heard of cutting them back? please explain? is this just cutting off all the slack in the spark plug lines? seems to be almost 2 inches of it.

My ski is on a hoist, so it's a little harder to just pull the carbs so i'll leave that for last resort, but i think this valve issue sounds like it could be the thing. it does tend to improve performance a little after i refuel, and i always figured it was just something associated with getting low on fuel, but high buildup pressure sounds more reasonable. I'm about to go suit up and ride, so ill try to remove this valve. thanks for the tip. i really do just need to get my carbs cleaned and polished though. bought the ski from a mechanic.. but that was 2 years ago.. and even so, its 14 years old and who knows how it was taken care of all its life.
