Steering cable "slipping"

So I was riding today for 15 - 20 minutes at a time then taking a break to play with the kids, well on the 4th time out my steering would catch and work sometimes and other times I would be full turned left or right and keep going straight. It would "catch" right after that but I wasn't taking any chances and brought it home. It's late so I haven't looked at it yet but does anyone know what's happening?? I'm gonna look into it tomorrow but I would also like to ride so any ideas where I can start? When I move the steering nozzle by hand it moves the bars and the bars turn the nozzle. I did have the pole off this week (along with the gas tank and water box out) to install a new pole spring. So I may have tweeked the steering cable moving everything around or if it was under my gas tank would that cause a problem??

Thanks,

J

The steering cable of a SJ tends to rub against the water box outlet. Once the outer plastic shield has rubbed through, the metal casing -which is regular steel- will rust and fracture. This might have happened.

The clip that holds it onto the pole under the chinpad is probably loose and letting it slip sometimes and sometimes not. I'd check that.

exact same thing happened to me. i had to reach my hand under the chinpad and hold the cable as i rode on my knees limping back to the launch.

That's the first place I'm gonna look. I was looking down there and turning the pole and something didn't look and feel right.

Thanks for the help so far guys, keep it coming if you have any more ideas.

Kennay was right. The cable had slipped out of this notch that holds it in place. I think there should be something there to keep it from getting out of place. I see a threaded hole, does anyone have a pic of what goes there to hold it in place? For now I just drilled a hole into the pole and zip tied it in place. Check out the pics and if someone could post a pic of what it's supposed to look like that would be great.

thanks for the help again guys!

I wouldn't trust that rigging at all. A clip goes in the groove on the cable itself, and then a 6mm bolt bolts the clip onto the handlepole.

Anyone got a pic of the clip I'm looking for and/or have one to sell me??
I forgot to mention that this is a rn pole on my sn ski.

thanks,

J

I actually have an extra one. I'm not sure if it's the brand new one or the used one I let go with my AC pole but your more than welcome to whichever is left. If you want it I can throw it in an envelope for you tonight just PM me your Address. Don't worry about funds, Karma has it covered. :)
