Stator Vane Repair

I sent my FX-1 stator off to have some of the chipped vanes repaired. I just got it back and it almost looks worse than before… I can see the repairs but there is a bunch of pitting and it just looks rough to me. I don’t want to flame anyone so I won’t say where it was done but I don’t want to be disrespectful by contacting the business owner and letting them know I’m not satisfied. Yeah, it’s a poopty old FX-1 pump and it sucked when it was new but with that aside, Am I being too critical or does this look sub par for a $150+ stator repair?

depends on what was promised........... If he send you pictures of before and after of another pump and it looked mint afterwards, then yeah, you may have gotten some crappy work. But if that is what he said he could do, then run it.

No promises or before and after pics. My expectations were higher than this though and all the grind marks around the hub and outer section just look sloppy. None of the pitting or gouges were there before though.

As someone has both made and seen a lot of really bad welds I think that you are not being overly critical , however in reality that price was really cheap , I agree that the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired from a welding standpoint , I will also say that those are really difficult areas to get in with a Tig welder even with the smallest cup on the torch and the price quoted is really cheap for that type of service , you may have well gotten what you paid for .

I wouldn't want to run that like it sits if that is what you are asking.

Pump casting is very porous, unfortunately this is what happens after welding.
It's porous but it does not have any oil impregnated in it like cases do , properly prepped and welded it should be fine , we used to have a guy weld up stator veins on Seadoo pumps years ago and when he got done you could tell it had been fixed because of the differences in the finish , but there were no voids and pits like I see going on here , if you have voids and pits you fill them in and grind it back down, the lob is not finished if you don't , this is what happens when you don't properly prep the Aluminum before welding it .

Tig welding Aluminum is very , very tedious work , the carbide bits you use to vee it out must never touch anything besides Aluminum , same with the stainless brushes used for cleaning , if you are sloppy you contaminate the Aluminum , after you get done with the carbide bits and the stainless brushes you wipe it with a clean cloth rag and Acetone , then you can weld it , even the oils in your skin can screw up a tig weld on Aluminum .

A little background here , I worked at a welding shop back in 2016-2019 , that's where my business was based out of, I did most of the steel welding there and we had guys come in to do the Aluminum , I was of course very interested in the whole Tig process and learned all I could from the guys there that did Aluminum welding , I can spool gun Aluminum pretty well but I have never tried to weld with a Tig , it's on my list to do this coming year and I have the Tig welder and the torch i just need to get an Argon bottle and regulator and get the water cooling on my machine setup.

Just give you some perspective on this, I've done a couple of these and spent A LOT of time, there is only so much you can do with a corroded 30 year old casting....

Yes but what you have done there and what Brapperdoodle has on his are worlds apart IMHO .

In all seriousness I have spool gunned stuff that looked way better than the work that was done on his stator.

Yeah I get it, with the condition of the base material on these things I don’t think you can even pay to get a decent job. If you notice in the pics of the one I repaired the base material above the actual repair blew out. You just wind up chasing it.

I'd run that pump all day. I also think the 150 was super fair for the repair. It's not like this a high performance pump and you are completing in the world finals

I agree bolt that thing in and forget about it. it will probably work better being a little roughed up like that anyways.

What choice does he have now, either throw more money at it or run it as is , I do agree the Kawi pump swap is the best option here but you gotta do what you gotta do.
