starter relay

Well I have done the research on this, but I need to ask a few more questions. I have an 01 superjet that I replaced the starter relay in 2 summers back. I am now having similar problems again. Hit start button, I get click, click, click start. Random amount of clicks before it starts. So far it always starts. I understand that the wires at the switch might be corroded, I have not checked yet but I will, and I'm good on my battery. How long should these starter relays last, and where's the cheapest place to get one??

could be corrosion, or weak connections at several places, battery terminals, ground cables, gound lugs inside E box, the terminals ON the relay itself, or in the start switch, or the connections between start switch and ebox.

make sure your battery is fully charged, and those connections are good and clean first ( the easiest to check)

I don't think you have any corrosion at the on/off switch (but check that of course during your troubleshooting). The fact that you get the clicks makes me think that the on/off switch side of things is OK as that is low current.

Rather, I would look into the higher current draw wiring (thick red cables), and grounds too (thick black cables). Check from the motor/starteer grounds all the way back into your electrical box. Also look for green corrosion creeping back under the red and black sheathing of the cables too.

the green start button on my ski gets a little corroded/dirty every couple of months...

it is real easy to check...

remove the switch from the bars, remove the little screw holding the bracket holding the green switch, then unscrew the cap on the green switch. Be careful taking off the lid, there is a spring in there... there are two contacts that touch a metal ring on the inside. Clean those spots where the contacts touch, and the contacts themselves.

quick easy way to trouble shoot bad ground cable.. take a car jumper cable set, attach the black clamp to your battery negative, and the other end black clamp to a bolt on the engine.

if it starts better, you know you have a bad ground battery cable.

all good stuff, I'll try the ground w/ jumber cables first, then check switch and then cables if necessary. Is there a way to check the relay itself when it's sporadic?

well I checked it all, battery is good, no corrosion on wires, I grounded the battery to motor (not a ground problem), I cleaned the start switch (wasn't bad, but did it anyway), checked connection at starter (clean), opened elect. box and the wires are clean and connection to relay is clean and tight. I guess I'm in for a another relay. Do I go oem at 50-60 bucks again or is there a cheaper way out?
