Super Jet starter rebuild, can i buy the parts?

Can the oem starters be rebuilt? The local alternator shop says $150 to have mine rebuilt, I told them no thanks.

Starter still works fine, the bearings (or are they bushings) just sound really dry.

I think we posted the individual part numbers for the seal, bushing and bearing a few months back.

I still have a complete set I bought from JSS a few years ago and never used.

too late now ! New brushes and such can't hurt my cause, unless its all chinese junk, which it probably is. Will be to the doorstep in 3 - 4 days.

Reporting back.. Ebay kit seems to be up to par, they sent all the correct parts and no extras. You'll want to pay attention when taking it apart as to how it was together, a few pieces dislodged themselves on me, but no big deal to rebuild.

The question of the day is, how does one get the bearing out of the cap on the on starter / bendix side and the metal bushing out on the other end near the brushes? They appear to be pressed in, but I couldn't begin to either to move with a hammer and punch. Thoughts? I am thinking there is a puller tool that exists for this application?

I use a bolt or thread a tap into it and then use it to pull the bearing. Just don't thread it in too far or it just binds it in even more.

Does that work for you on the side with the needle bearing ? As fate would have it I tapped on it a little too agressively with a punch and broke a small chunk off the "cap" closest to the bendix side of the starter... Anyone have a junk one around that they want to part with ? Who dare I ask first ?

Sorry, that trick only works for the brass bushing. I would have done the same as you and used a hammer and punch to remove the small needle bearing.

I'm sure there are lots of junk ones laying around if you put up a wanted add.

Is it possible to try the dry ice trick, maybe some heat on the bearing carrier? Not sure if it would work for the application or not, just a thought.

You might try heating the housing - no more than 300F- but remove seal first. I don't think you can chill the installed bearing successfully because the needles shield the outer race.
