So i was riding yesterday and hitting it hard! All was well untill i turned the ski off to talk to a friend. After the chat I pressed the start button to hear a fast turning sound with the sound of clinks. I got a tow to the beach when i tried to start it again with the hood off... The sound I hear sounds like the starter is spinning and the bendix is clinking but not fully engaging the flywheel. I then lifted the bike all the way up so that the nose was in the sand and the tail straight up in the air, My buddy pressed the start button and the clinking sounded louder as if gravity was helping to engage the bendix. I think it is a rust/gunky bendix, what do you think? I have concern because i have NEVER taken off a starter or bendix nor do i know really what im looking for. Can you guys give me tips during the removal process that someone who was trying it for the first time wouldnt know? I plan to take off the exhaust today and get at it. Thanks

blaster12.jpgcan you be more specific? because i have only messed w/ carb and all other BOLT ONs so i dont know much about the engine. When you say to pull of front cover, where exactly is this? do i need to remove the starter motor?.

No just pull off the front cover by the gas tank and the get a flywheel puller and get the flywheel off and the bendix pops right out but u will prolly have to pull out the motor

what is a flywheel puller? I just want to WD the heck out of the bendix, is there anyway to do this fix without buying special tools? what would make me have to pull the motor? that would SUCK

Go to a auto parts store and grab a harmonic balencer puller it will work the same you probably have to pull motor because there is no room between flywheel and tank I can pull my flywheel in my superjet by removing my tank but in my 650sx I gotta yank motor its easy but there are three threaded holes in the flywheel and then in the puller has three that will line up thfead the bolt in the three holes not to far cause you will hit the stator and damage ur stator I so say like five full turns you have to remove the flywheel bolt before all this tho but once you thread the puller on put the big bolt threw the middle of the puller and thread it to where the flywheel bolt is it will not thread into the crank how the bolt did it will push against it but the use a wench and snug the big bolt that pushes on crank and u have to smack it with a hammer and retighten and repeat or if u dont want to hit it with hammer you have to use a impact gun and it will come right off

that was really confusing but i ill see if i got it.. so goto the auto store and buy a harmonic balencer puller. Then remove the front cover on the motor. use the harmonic balance puller on the fly wheel... here is where im lost. i guess the flywheel puller screws into the flywheel and i then need to rotate the flywheel 5 times. i dont know what im suposed to do with the hammer or wench lol.

okay so i put on the harmonic balance puller and then thread the big bolt into the center hole and it will contact the crank. I will tighten the bolt with a "wrench" (is what i think you ment to type?) Then using a big hammer "LOL" ill proceed to wack the big bolt. then tighten screw and re-wack.. repeating untill the flywheel pops off? is this correct?

Wen it pops off look for the woodruff key it looks like the half circle small piece of metal dont loose it it holds the flywheel from spinning on crank u need it lol

No dont rotate flywheel five times there are three bolts you have to screw into the flywheel itself those go in five turns
